relegation

“There May Be Trouble Ahead…”

One thing that is certain with relegation is the end of the Premier League gravy train. Despite the new and improved parachute payments, it’s certain that there will be a fairly hefty hole in Birmingham City’s cashflow next season. There has been quite a lot of comment about how this is going to affect Blues, and I thought it might be worth looking at further.

It’s The End Of The World As We Know It

Of course, yesterday wasn’t the end of the world at all – it felt bad, but Blues have been relegated before. No doubt they will be again either. And like Mr Stipe sang, I’m fine with it. After about ten minutes of feeling very mopey, I came to the very quick realisation that relegation isn’t going to kill Birmingham City.

So long, and thanks for the memories.

Normally, I produce my reflections. Today, things are a little different:

D-Day

So the day is upon us. Today is the day we’ll find out if we’re going to be plucky survivors, or relegated victims. As I alluded to a couple of days ago, it’s been difficult knowing what to write – I want to be positive and put forth my belief in the team but I don’t want the accompanying kick in the cojones if and when we go down.

Hope Springs Eternal

It’s been a hard week to write articles about Birmingham City. Sunday will be one of the most important weekends in the year as our Premier League fate will be decided for this season, and it’s because of that I’m struggling to write. I’m hoping like hell we’ll stop up – and the fear of us going down is getting to me.

Taking our Chances.

Survival Sunday. It’s a dramatic finale to the Premiership, and for once Sky are probably not too far off with the hyperbole involved in the final day. Four matches can affect the outcome of who goes down, and sadly, Birmingham City are right in the mixer.

Gutless

I’m not going to write a match report for the Fulham game. There are so many synonyms for gutless, and having left myself with fifteen minutes to go feeling physically sick at just how bad we’d played, I couldn’t do it justice. Suffice it to say, that was the kind of performance that not only gets you relegated, but deserves relegation.

At the beach

Peter Crouch’s own goal last night might have just sealed Manchester City’s Champions League place, but for us Blues fans it could be one of the keys to saving us from relegation, as well as possibly enabling us to enter the Europa League at a later round than we previously thought.

Trapdoor Pt III

I have to open this post by saying that my gut feeling that 36 or 38 points to stay up was probably wrong. The way the results have panned out this weekend have left me feeling that we must beat Fulham now to be secure in our future; whilst defeat may not ultimately cost us heavily I don’t believe we can afford to find out if that is the case.

The Fear

One thing that has been extensively argued on Birmingham City messageboards this season has been the dour football that the Blues have dished up on a regular basis for the fans. Whilst the team is high on work-rate, and on battling for points, it’s low on creativity and fashioning chances, let alone goals. The accusation is often levelled at Alex McLeish that he is too negative with his tactics, and too careful in the teams he sends out.
