Referee Watch – Gavin Ward
Barring any late changes, Gavin Ward will be in the middle for Blues’ Championship game against Huddersfield Town tomorrow. Here is a look at his stats.
Season Performance
Mr Ward has taken charge of twelve games so far this season, showing thirty-two yellow cards and three reds. Of those matches, only one has been in this division and in that game he showed three yellow cards.
Last Blues Game Refereed
The last fixture involving Blues Mr Ward officiated in was the 1-0 win over Peterborough last September. In that game Mr Ward showed four yellow cards – to David Murphy, Paul Caddis, Peter Lovenkrands of Blues and Lee Frecklington of Peterborough United. His performance in that game was rated as a “shocker” in my match report.
Last Championship Game Refereed
The last Championship game refereed by Mr Ward was the 1-0 away win by QPR over Yeovil at Huish Park in September. In that game he booked three players – Ed Upson and Joe Ralls of Yeovil and Charlie Austin of QPR.
Suspension Watch
1 red card – Wade Elliott (two matches of a three match suspension to serve)
6 yellow cards – Paul Robinson (one match suspension served)
3 yellow cards – Neal Eardley, Dan Burn and Jonathan Spector
2 yellow cards – Tom Adeyemi, Kyle Bartley, and Shane Ferguson
1 yellow card – Darren Ambrose, Lee Novak, Koby Arthur, Wade Elliott, Jesse Lingard, Matt Green, Nikola Zigic, Colin Doyle, David Murphy, Paul Caddis, Callum Reilly and Andrew Shinnie
The “cut-off” point where a fifth yellow card will no longer attract a suspension is after December 31 2013 and the point where a tenth yellow card will no longer attract a suspension is after April 13 2014.

allocated another dodgy ref great!
Cut and paste doesn’t always work – Line 1
To be serious, is there actually a decent ref at Championship level or do we just always get the rubbish ones. I don’t think I’ve seen a good referee all season.
He’ll probably disallow a goal, deny us a couple of stonewall penalties, book 3 of our players and send Lee Clark to the stands.
Just your average match official for a Blues game then. :-)
too right staffs, lets hope we are all ;-0 on saturday cannot stand been miserable lol
After the international break is the most important period for us mark. 4 home games out of 6 before Xmas will make or break Lee Clark I think. I hope we come out of that spell with at least 12 points, for his sake.
We’ve conceded the first goal in 10 of our 14 games so far. Therin lies the real problem. We could do with another experienced head in centre defence.
totally agree with your sentiments regarding Clark…….but the players need to start showing balls, and take on board what Clark and playing staff want from them every game………wade take notice………….
Absolutely with you on that.
I cant understand why we lose so many goals so early in each half. It is as iof the Players are still in the dressing room and haven’t realized that the game has started.
well, how right can you be?!?! 1 Goal disallowed and one stupid red card….. still didnt stop us winning though! :)
If we ever get a ‘homer’ ref I’ll die happy :)
Gavin Ward is awful. He was also our ref for the 1-0 over Doncaster at St Andrews when Nafti was sent off early on (& Jerome scored a wicked volley that won it)
Chris, this is where I think Robbo should be having an influence. Being the oldest, most experienced player in the team AND the captain…. you’d think he’d have them at it from the first whistle.
Sorry, Chas.
:-) No problem, Staffs. I obviously haven’t seen the match, but I doubt we can blame the Ref for Bartley’s sending off. Why do footballers think of taking their shirts off, they know they are going to get booked and to do it after already being booked is truly senseless.
OIO)PS, after reading the Mail and the Mirror reports, it looks like he didn’t take his shirt off , so blame will be held back till I see it myself.
booked for leaving the field of play not his celebrations
The second yellow may have been for jumping into the crowd, in which case it would be for leaving the field of play. I doubt we can attribute blame to Mr Ward for it really. Just glad we have won tbf
Spot on. Bartley says he jumped a yard over the hoardings to celebrate with the Blues’ fans. There were no Huddersfield supporters anywhere near…. so exactly who was he inciting?
Can anyone confirm that it’s just a one-game ban for 2 yellows? If it’s more, he’ll either have to bring Mullins in as cover, or re-call Packwood from his loan.
A few Players have been booked for celebrating with the Crowd, Staffs, Liam Daish springs to mind. Still, a very good and welcome win.
Having seen it now, I will say that I think the decision was absolutely ludicrous.
Where did you see it ?

Oh My God ..What an Officious little shit.. What a prat. That is indeed a ludicrous decision. If the FL have any sense they will rescind that card and sack the little twerp. Thanks Daniel.
Congratulations to every player and to Lee Clark. Fabulous win. We always bounce back from a bad result. Shows we have something in there.
