It’s the international break again and once again a fallow time for club football. Demarai Gray has returned from u19 duty with England early as a precaution to an ankle injury while Bobby Moseley has been forced to return home from the Republic of Ireland u19 squad with a groin strain.

Summer 2014 Squad Analysis Pt I

With the close season properly upon us and the Blues retained list now made public, I thought it might be an opportune time to take a look at the squad as it stands to see where the squad stands and what needs to be done to ensure it can be competitive next year in the Championship.

First Half Subs

Birmingham City slumped to a 4-2 defeat against Blackburn leaving them outside the Championship relegation places on goal difference only. A first half hat-trick from Rudy Gestede along with a deflected effort from Todd Kane gave Rovers a commanding 4-0 lead at the break and while Blues gave the scoreline some respectability by pulling back goals with Nikola Zigic and Demarai Gray it was another sorry afternoon at St Andrew’s.

The Relegation Mixer

Blues managed to strengthen their chances of staying in the Championship this weekend without playing a game as the six teams below them failed to win. Indeed, had it not been for a stoppage time goal from Millwall’s Martyn Woolford in their 2-2 draw against Watford then the weekend would have been almost perfect.

Taking Stock

With the win over Leeds Blues now know what division they will be in next season – the first time for three years that has been decided before the last game. As there is no extra money for placing higher in the Championship like there is in the Premier League, the last two games are dead rubbers (for Blues at any rate) and as fans we can start to take stock on the season properly.

With just nine games left of the season Blues find themselves in fourteenth place with forty-six points in the Championship. Have they done enough to completely avoid the relegation trap-door?

The Loss of Marlon King

Talking Points sponsored by John Hicken Industrial roofing and cladding materials

One of the things to come out of the draw with Blackpool was the lack of clinical finishing from Birmingham City to kill the game off when leading 1-0. With leading scorer Marlon King now out for the remainder of the season are Blues going to suffer badly due to the loss of their Jamaican striker?

Twenty Years

Birmingham City’s unbeaten away run in 2013 came to a crashing halt with a heavy 5-2 defeat to Hull City yesterday. Blues went behind after just 49 seconds and only late goals from Peter Lovenkrands and Chris Burke made any dent in what was a crushing scoreline.

Back To Back Clean Sheets

Birmingham City completed back to back clean sheets by shutting out Peterborough at London Road on Saturday 2-0. With clean sheets hard to come by this year (six in thirty-eight games in all competitions) I thought it might be interesting to look at when this feat was last achieved.

Lee Clark told the Birmingham Mail yesterday that he was pleased with the performance against Sheffield Wednesday on Saturday and pointed to the fact that Blues have only lost one game in their last seven and were thus making progress in their bid to climb the table.
