Blues Development Squad Overcome Young Red Warriors in Friendly
A young Blues Development squad beat Vietnam’s u20 team 4-2 in a friendly at Wast Hills yesterday. Goals from George McGee, Liam Truslove and Reece Brown along with an own goal helped the Blues to a victory having been 2-0 down after just 16 minutes.
Vietnam’s u20 side played Blues only two days after losing to a young Tottenham side 9-0 in London, and as a last minute replacement for Wolves who were supposed to be their opponents.
The Vietnamese youngsters took the lead after 12 minutes through 19-year-old Nguyen Cong Phuong – his fourth goal for Guillaume Graechen’s side in their European training camp. They then doubled their tally four minutes later when 17-year-old Le Van Son netted. Like many players in the squad, both Van Son and Cong Phuong play for the Hoang Anh Gia Lai – Arsenal JMG Academy in Pleiku, which is partly run and funded by Arsenal FC.
Blues got a goal back before half time through striker George McGee, who as offered a third year scholarship deal yesterday. Within minutes of the second half starting Liam Truslove made it 2-2. It remained tight until late in the second half when a Vietnamese defender sliced the ball into the net from a Demarai Gray cross before Reece Brown wrapped up the win with a 25 yarder.
Vietnam u20s will now travel to Belgium to play two matches against the JMG Academy there before heading to the Netherlands and a match against Ajax’s youth side.
In other news, Welsh defender Darcy Blake who was on trial at Blues looks like he will sign for Newport County until the end of the season on a non-contract basis. Newport lie in 14th place in League Two.
