News Round-up

Blues have been linked to 29-year-old Swedish defender Markus Holgersson according to Sky Sports News. Holgersson made a solitary substitute appearance for Wigan last season after signing on a short-term deal in February and his contract wasn’t renewed. His previous career saw him play for New York Red Bulls in MLS for two seasons and he won the treble in Sweden with Helsingborgs in 2011.

Holgersson did play at centre-half in the MLS but he moved across to right back in the latter-half of the 2013 season and he played as a full back in Sweden. He played 32 regular-season games for the Red Bulls in 2013 and in both legs of the playoff defeat to Houston Dynamo; however he didn’t impress Uwe Rosler and struggled to get into the squad at the DW Stadium.

Birmingham City have sent an Academy team to the “Sportfan 2014 Football Festival” in Kaunas, Lithuania. The festival, which is in its fifth year has teams competing from Lithuania, Estonia, Poland, Belarus and Latvia but this is the first time that a well-known English team has sent a team to play. Blues play in the first game against Dinamo Riga this afternoon with matches taking place over the next three days. Sponsors Adidas will be giving out prizes to the best four teams and individual players.

It’s another feather in the Academy’s cap with teams of differing age groups being invited to these kind of tournaments and will present a different kind of challenge to the kids in the team. It’s testament to the good work that has gone on down at Wast Hills and I think it’s being reflected in the amount of academy kids who are progressing towards professional deals – one of the best ways Blues can secure their own future is to produce their own stars.

It has also been confirmed that Blues  are to play Skrill Premier side Forest Green Rovers in a pre-season friendly on July 15.

More rubbish rejects will this nightmare ever end sounds like we are in for another boring struggle next season typical blues really.

  • Chris W says:

We might as well be linked with Wayne Rooney or RVP because until BIHL get their fingers from up their proverbial we won’t sign anyone.
I can’t see much happening this weekend and then we will be into June.
If news on other teams are true we will be left with less than last season and who would blame Burke Ziggy or Packwood to look elsewhere.

Tend to think that NO signings CAN be formalised/agreed until new owners in place and new manager or Clark confirmed. I also assume that any agreements made with players/agents would be subject to this and probably not binding.

  • Oldbluenose says:

Dan, When do the financial commitments to the football league have to be finalised, ?.

    • Andy W says:

I have an idea it’s the 30th May?

      • Chris W says:

I think that is when the provisional figures have to be submitted and they have to be finalised and accepted before the new fixtures are published around end of June early July.

          Thanks lads.

        • Eric says:

          fixture list out June 18

          • Chris W says:

That means the final figures have to be agreed earlier.
I was going on information supplied by the Football League prior to the end of season, I think they were based on last season. Maybe they have to be finalised by mid July, but then if things are not up to standard they would struggle to rearrange alternatives. Maybe this season it has been bought forward due to the world cup?

A non-football question, sorry if this is out of order, but has anyone heard anything from StaffsBlue since OP came back online ? I don’t remember seeing anything from him lately.

    • bluenoserob says:

i miss old staffs , he was our daddy

    • mark says:

hi chas staffsblue did make a comment or two earlier when Daniel came back on line, Another poster made brash comments of him which i thought were truly uncalled for. I believe he gave a wonderful collection thoughtful comments along with some very good humor. I hope he does return and not be put off by the sometimes mindless few.

      • Chas says:

Thanks Mark for the reply. This is a complaint I have about the Internet, people post insults without thinking. Staffs is a very good poster and has earned his right to his opinions, he never tries to force them on others. I hope he comes back.

  • Gary says:

I agree mate what we thought was going to be a good end to the season is going to be a nightmare by the look of it.

  • mark says:

Daniel not noted on your blog pre-season starts on 30th June bet the lads are chomping at the bits to get stuck in, i might add i bet Clark is aswell……..

    • Andy W says:

I’m not sure he is Mark……..he has four weeks to assemble a squad……….he doesn’t even know which players he can/can’t keep, let alone what the parameters are for buying and loaning new players………he probably has deals lined up but can’t complete them until news comes out of HK, by which time he may lose some of those identified targets to elsewhere anyway? He doesn’t even know if his job is secure.

  • mark says:

Academy team great news about bcfc sending them out there playing some very different styles of play………can only be good for the long term

  • mark says:

regarding the centre back issue a would like to see if Clark can find two bartley and burns i wonder how hard can what be, and call them our own…………..

  • mark says:

just to give food for thought about defenders just to mention how good a signing was kylie Bartley contribution 19app 5goals for us and imo was getting better and better each game……
it that what ifs again how things could have looked differently had we were able to keep players of his status we might have not been looking down the barrel of the gun come the end of the season………..no mention how well clark got these both boys to play to their max before they there ripped from our soul…..

    • Mr Crosby says:

He kept us in the championship by 1 point. He won’t be so lucky next season.

      • Chris W says:

We stayed up on goal difference and I think we safely say that was down to Bartley and Burns understanding helped by the 5 goals Bartley scored.
I see Macheda has been released, now that would be a good signing.

  • Chas says:

Talking about Money, if QPR get promoted today, is their share of the parachute payments still shared out amongst the Championship Teams , doe anyone know. It would help us out a bit.

  • Chas says:

Damn, Does anyone know if, should QPR get Promoted today, their remaining Parachute payments are shared out amongst the rest of the Championship teams ? We could do with some of that.

  • Richard Granfield says:

There has been an estimated 900 pro. footballers released by their clubs at the end of last season! LC may be able to pick up a few bargains with a decent salary budget….Sheola Ameobi comes to mind.

  • Blooflame says:

so…another can’t get a game loser near the end of his career will be signed up for BCFC!!?? Not exactly ambition is it? It’s imperative we use the kids and blood them.
