Ribeiro Decides to Stay at Exeter

It’s been confirmed in the last half hour that purported Blues target Christian Ribeiro has decided to extend his contract at Exeter City.

The Welsh international who was voted player of the season for the Grecians has signed a new contract to extend his stay at St James’ Park until the end of the upcoming campaign reports the Exeter Express and Echo.

There hadn’t actually been any concrete evidence from the club that Blues had been interested in the 25-year-old although it had been reported in the Birmingham Mail that there was interest there.

Another name has emerged with alleged Blues interest – Jermaine Grandison of Shrewsbury Town. Grandison, 24, is a tall centre-half who can also play right back and has been linked with Blues following his rejection of a new deal from the Shrews. Grandison is Birmingham-born and came through the Coventry City academy, making five appearances in the Championship for the Sky Blues over two seasons as a teenager.

  • Bluey says:

So we can`t lure a guy from Exeter and now we`re looking at a player from Shrewsbury. Desperate times.

    • Lee says:

when you say we can’t lure him, how do you know we even tried to? Maybe rowetts not even looked at him, your just listening to speculation, nobody at bcfc has said we even wanted him

    • Richard Granfield says:

Bluey….How do you know that Rowett was trying to “lure” him?

    • MA24 says:

I don’t think we were even after him, probably decided to stay at Exeter once he found out he hadn’t got any better offers. He seems like a good player but guess we’ll never truly know anyway.

  • edd77 says:

For God’s sake you got to feel for rowett if players are choosing Exeter over us ,I hope we see some signings soon ,I’m getting concerned now ,training starts soon

    • OllieBluenose says:

Sounds more like agent-fueled speculation to get a new deal to me.

Don’t be so negative anyway, there’s far too much of that of that going on behind the scenes, the last thing we need is for the fans to start becoming negative towards Rowett and his targets before we’ve even signed them and before they’re even played a game.

      Trust the man. KRO.

  • Richard Granfield says:

I never really thought Ribeiro was a realistic acquisition for a Championship club.
His CV….Bristol City, Scunthorpe and Exeter plus loans at Stockport, Colchester and Carlisle speaks for itself.

  • Len says:

Can’t see it being true tbh, I would have believed it last season. Bear in mind the EM need clicks to bring in the bucks.

  • Ray Hobrow says:

Don’t believe the speculation, players are / have been away on holidays. Maybe Rowett is concentrating on bringing back some of the players we had last season # in Rowett we trust kro

  • StaffsBlue says:

Again, not ars*d about this non-signing. IF Ribeiro has turned us down for Exeter… then I’m glad, as it shows a lack of ambition… which we could well do without.

  • Mitchell says:

As I say, deals have already been done and GR not bothered one bit with paper talk transfers. Exeter players, Shrewsbury etc. not one confirmed report by GR. It is generally a wind up to get supporters either excited or exasperated. Keep up the feel good factor and think of last months Cup Final. There what did I tell you!

  • Hillfield Blues says:

As desperate as things have been over the past 3-4yrs it’s hard to believe that Exeter City have beaten us to the punch with this. Clearly we didn’t want him and he’s signed another contract there.
Media speculation….take it or leave it.

  • Waycoolblue says:

I don’t think any of the targets we have been linked with are real targets . I think its all just pepper talk. GR as not give any indecision to the press so they are just pulling thing out I think we will only see who the targets are as there completed.

  • rhees says:

Well if grandison cant get contract at shewsbury why do we want him ffs

    • Bluepenguin76 says:

Rhees i think he he’s been offered a deal but turned it down! he could be a real talent for all we know! it could on the other hand just be speculation.

  • keeprighton says:

Jay Emmanuel-Thomas was never a target for Birmingham
Christian Ribeiro may have been but would have only been as cover
Jermaine Grandison is a almost identical type player so again if he is a target its as cover.

We have been linked with lots of player most would not improve what we already have.

  • Hillfield Blues says:

At the end of the day Rowett is always going to be linked with these lower league players because that’s where he used to ply his trade at Burton. Yes it’s quiet but so it is at all the other championships/premiership clubs at the moment.

  • THe Francis Fake says:

I live in the Shrewsbury area and Grandison definitely has potential. He has a languid style and ability on the ball. Definite one for the Championship. Highly rated here.

  • Mark Ryley says:

Rowett had insisted that we would be excited with the new signing so he must of already agreed with the players or that was a brave statment to make .

  • He who tries to get everything for nowt , ends up with nowt

  • Tony says:

Well if its true and this guy has decided to stay at the football backwoods of Exeter rather than join us we are in a bad way, or maybe hes frightened of the step up and his ability to cut it.

  • andy says:

Financially Birmingham will not be paying wages any higher than Exeter, having said that, Lee Clark persuaded players to join Blues on lower wages by selling the “massive” club to them. I would be surprised if the player chose Exeter over Birmingham, be interesting to hear what Gary Rowett has to say about that.

    • waycoolblue says:

Exeter’s top players only get 1k-2k per week. we can offer a lot more than that. even last season we was paying 5k this season its a good but more almost double.

  • Brumbie says:

I am realistic enough to know we won’t attract quality players because these players will always go to bigger clubs who have more money. We are going to have to hope GR can build a competitive team with a small budget and we as fans need to be realistic about our club as over ambitious expectations do not help. I am a proud bluenose and all this ‘massive’ club nonsense only piles pressure on everyone at the club.

    • waycoolblue says:

Some Clubs in the championship may have more money but that don’t make them bigger the Birmingham there ant many clubs bigger the US In the championship. We ant in the market for premiership quality players but we can and will get quality championship players GR as show us that already.

  • Jazzzy786 says:

Ha ha ha Birmingham Mail more egg on your face

  • Blueboi14 says:

IF we were after him, it may be the case that because we couldn’t guarantee 1st team football he decided to stay at Exeter.

  • KRO says:

If Gary Rowett went in for him or not this is embarrassing for blues and its not doing the club any good for attracting the fans back as usual the owners are making us look shoddy and its only going to get worse.

    • Taz says:

In what way is this embarrassing to the club? Neither GR nor BCFC have ever confirmed that they were even remotely interested in this player. You can’t stop the press from inventing tenuous links with various obscure players in order to sell their papers.
It is just my opinion but, I believe that if ANY championship side was serious about signing a player from division 2, then that player would jump at the chance of moving up the league. I suspect that the only reason Ribeiro has stayed at Exeter is purely because no higher placed clubs have offered him a contract – Exeter have.
There are thousands of players in the lower divisions that Gary Rowett has not gone in for. Are we to take it that we should be embarrassed because most of these players have signed another contract with their clubs rather than wait for us to come along?

  • paulieboy says:

Media speculation/bull**** whatever, we are being made to look a very small minded club with little aspirations for bringing in quality players.
BM needs to back off and stop making Blues look “a team from back yonder” whilst continually highlighting Aston Vanilla(the team that everyone licks!) as the Big Guns,of whch they certainly aren’t.
However in reality we are a relatively small minded club due to the disgusting way we are controlled by non-football people who are using us as a ping pong ball whilst they avoid the inevitable outcome of what they have done over the last 7+ years.
Yes the “Bournemouth Model” is a great barometer but I think we are probably at least one season off getting to this level based on 1) Rowett needs at least another season to get the experience of the Championship, moving up from his lower league cv to-date(of which I have no doubt he will), 2) We will not get the same quality of players like Bournemouth had/have in one season, need more time to equip and then go for it.
Question to my fellow agents, D.Mann and Mitchell : Have you pulled any players out of the bag for GR this coming week? If not go for it, time is against us!

  • swissjonny says:

Its a horrible thing to say-especialy as someone who dreamt of playing for our great club as a kid-but if you were a footballer, with an agent and we came calling you would have to sit down with your adviser and have a good think. This is the footballers livelihood. How many of us would join a company whose largest shareholder is inside.Whose finances are not exactly wonderful and whose future is anything but clear and straightforward. When you think of it in these terms GR is going to have a hell of a job persuading players to come and join us.I know its a very negative thought but I suspect its the reality.

    • Mirkwood55 says:

Exactly the same situation as it was this time last year but it didn’t seem to stop LC bringing in the likes of Randolph, Grounds, Gunning, Edgar, Cotterill, Duffy, Thomas and Donaldson. And GR had no trouble persuading Morrison to make his loan permanent. We must be doing something right.

  • StaffsBlue says:

Basically, all we can do is sit on our thumbs and wait and see what Rowett has lined up. He’s no fool and I don’t think he’ll bring in players who aren’t good enough. It’s just a matter of waiting. Annoying I know, but, he said we’d be ‘pleasantly surprised’… so I’m holding him to it. :)

  • Mitchell says:

Paulieboy makes some good points and all I can say is that ‘yes’ Mr. Mann and myself are working Round the Clock’ to get GR the players he has asked for. End of this week will have smiles all round.

  • Dave Mann says:

I said it yesterday and I will say it now .. Stop panicking because we’re have at least three by the end of the week and those that have been mentioned besides the Shrewsbury lad were not good enough anyway …. We’re be ok ime sure and Gary said we’re be pleasently supprised and I’ve got no reason to feel any different .. ! Kro

  • That’s good news Dave Mann , but I still can’t see why information like this has not been passed on to all the fans even with the word possibly would be good , blues fans of today are possibly the best I have ever known , but being treated like lepers with a hearing problem is not on , come on Gaz R your part of the family ,talk to us

  • Dave Mann says:

Gary will do his talking when he signs these players William so we’re be fine and hopefully we’re be happy with them .. Rumours are all well and good but Gary will talk to us when he presents those players to the fans ime sure ! Kro

  • Stephen Powell says:

I like the fact that GR is keeping quiet as we wont be disappointed if a transfer does not come off, we are where we are at present and until we have new owners, we have to make do with what we can afford without putting the club in financial trouble

  • BhamCityJulian says:

I smell a rat. The £13m hasn’t been fully completed and the monies from that are needed to finalise the transfers. Was there anything in the last SE announcement to say to the contrary?

    • almajir says:

Apart from the fact the 13mil wasn’t for BCFC, it was for BIH, you’re bang on Julian…

I suspect your cynicism is just a tad misplaced :)

      • BhamCityJulian says:

My we are being pedantic today. Yes the loan is being taken out by BIH, but as the major trading subsidiary and given that the close season is months of negative cash flow workout transfer dealings perhaps some funds need to trickle down to BCFC to pay for signing on payments and the first instalments of transfer. My point is the loan may be need to be in place for BIH to be able to cover theses outgoings

  • BhamCityJulian says:

    Replace ‘workout’ with ‘even without’

  • StaffsBlue says:

So, first game is Reading at home on 8th August.

  • Dave Mann says:

Yes staffs it’s got me buzzing with the working out of away games to go to and an easy first home game of the season against reading ‘ we want 7’ .. Tough start but enjoying looking at the dates and teams were playing , lovely jubely!! Kro

  • Dave Mann says:

Rob Kiernan fails medical at Blues and signs for Rangers ! Explain??! Kro

  • Dave Mann says:

I suppose the English championship is a lot better than the Scottish championship and there not as fussy .. Though that’s one of the three loans gone .. But give me the other two and I will be well happy . Kro
