Full Squad for Nuneaton

Pre-season begins in earnest with Blues taking on Nuneaton Town tonight at the James Parnell stadium in their first warm-up match prior to the beginning of the 2015-16 campaign.

Blues are expected to take a full-strength side with them to face the team they beat in the Birmingham Senior Cup final back in May, although there should be some younger members of the squad also involved in the match at some point. Nuneaton have already faced off against local rivals Coventry City, drawing 0-0 and will be hoping for goals from new signing Marlon Harewood.

For Blues I think it’s going to be all about the new guys. It’ll be Jacques Maghoma’s first run out in a Blues shirt in front of the fans and I’m curious as to whether he will play on the left, the right or through the middle – and how he will dovetail with Dimmi Gray and David Cotterill. Koby Arthur didn’t go to Marbella due to fitness and it’ll be interesting to see if he’s anywhere near the side tonight; my hope for the Ghanaian is that he is groomed for a more central role where I think he would be most effective.

In goal it’s going to be a straight toss up between Tomasz Kuszczak and Adam Legzdins – and whether Rowett will give them 45 minutes each or decide to alternate which games they play in. I’d prefer the latter as I think it would be important to give them whole games to bed in and to learn to work with their defences – but it might be that the management prefer to build fitness in both keepers with workouts against Nuneaton.

One player who I think could push for a place in the first team is Wes Harding. David Edgar is in Toronto for Canada’s last Group match in the CONCACAF Gold Cup against Costa Rica leaving Jonathan Spector, Paul Robinson and Michael Morrison as the remaining centre-backs available for Blues. Harding did well by accounts in the press in Marbella and he could be rewarded with a spot on the bench tonight to continue showing how far he has progressed towards the first team.

The match kicks off tonight at 7:30pm BST, with tickets priced at £10 for adults and £3 for children in the standing area with an extra £2 payable in the seating area.

I am sure all 23 players who went to Marbella will play some part tonight. Arthur may be selected for the Development squad’s game against Leicester behind closed doors this morning at Wast Hills.
The new home strip should be unveiled today too.

  • ChrisG says:

GR has said he plans to play a different side in each half so I imagine the goalies will only get 45 mins each

  • Richard Granfield says:

I see Tom Adeyemi has joined Leeds on a seasons loan. Obviously surplus to requirements at Cardiff.

  • StevieW says:

How refreshing to be talking football again the result does not matter the way we play does.

But above all else winning is everything.

  • Andrew says:

wont be long before we are poaching players from teams like nuneaton

  • Dave Mann says:

Gary said he’s playing two teams of 11 each half and I would imagine it will also be two different formations also , all players getting game time with changing tactics and rotation as we go along , 4-2-3-1 will without doubt be his preferred formation but as Staffs says we’ve got to give everybody a chance and see where we are … Wonder what this surprise is we’re getting with the kit launch this afternoon??? Let’s see! Kro

  • I have been sitting here for 10 minutes starting a comment in my mind ,but failing to print for dread of once more sounding peed off with the lack of first team choice signings to give us quality passing and more goals , I am trying to remain positive , as it seems the team we start the season with could remain so for two years, till the debt is paid , it as the window gets closer to closing seems more likely that we are going to Be left with what’s left , what seemed like a new start at the start of the window is now beginning to feel a failure , where many clubs signed pre contractoral agreements we have only strengthened in depth ,and not in the three weakened positions left by loanies going back , here i go again feeling totally gutted, with the feeling there is another let down round the corner ,,

    • Andrew says:

Im not quite sure where blues fans reaped in so much optimism for this season, its almost like we were taken over by wealthy oil baron over night and i dont know about it. All the talk from the club and hype that we are going places is rubbish as far as i can see we will be lucky to attain the same finish as last season and this will be best case scenario. Im not negative person but i deal in realism and dont like to get too carried away.

      • Andrew says:

… the signings we have made so far have been good, gary rowett has done tremendously so far and we are lucky to have that. but to think we were going to go out and spend 2-3-4 mill on players then wages etc its never going to happen.

  • Dave Mann says:

Gray to sign new deal with kit release today?? Good news?? Kro

  • Adam Whitehouse says:

If you watched GR’s video on the blues site he makes mention that he will be hopefully completing 3 further signings towards the end of this week, If they don’t quite happen then he has got alternative’s. Give him chance, now is not the time to start your moaning, you sound just like ‘villains’. Kro

  • Dave Mann says:

I agree though a £8million get out clause or something similar must be put in place I feel . Kro

  • Darren says:

    Gray signs new 3 year deal… :-)

  • Dave Mann says:

Now we have to move on that NOW!kro

  • Richard Granfield says:

I like the new kit……Blue shirt with a white sash, white shorts and blue socks smashing.
Best signing of the summer so far, Demarai Gray 3 year deal.

    • StaffsBlue says:

Sorry, to disagree. I think awful. Worst kit we’ve had in years. I see it as a piece of advertising, that’s all.

      • Geoff S says:

It is a modern replica of the original 1875 SHA strip but I can’t tell yet whether the blue will be as dark as it was all those year ago. Somebody has obviously checked out Blues’ Wiki pages and also the Historical Football Kits website.

As such, I suppose the strip is okay for a one-off commemoration.

The crest will surely return to the globe and ball once the 140 year commemorations are done.

Advertising? You may be right, Staffs. Plain blue shirt, plain white shorts and plain blue socks is what I think would suit most Blues fans. I prefer the lack of jazzy bits.

Do you remember plain blue shirts, plain blue shorts and plain white socks in 1967?

        • StaffsBlue says:

I always thought we looked the business in all blue, but it seems that there’s more and more white creeping into our kit. But most of all, it’s all the advertising on the shirt that makes it look cheap. The last time I disliked one of our shirts, was 2010-2011. This new one is as bad.

          • Geoff S says:

I also think advertising looks bad (even tacky) on shirts and now shorts and the plainer the kit, the better.

          • Geoff S says:

The more white there is in the shirt, the poorer it looks. That is why I thought last season’s kit looked so good (advertising aside).

I reckon this sash design will be a one-off (for the commemoration) and I reckon any future “Penguin” style should perhaps be limited to the change strip. How about red shirt with a black chest for the change strip or a variation on the “German flag” shirt which seemed popular in the early 1970s?

    • Adam True Blue says:

And Sorry but I have to disagree about the signing, I think Kuszczak is an inspired signing and will earn his shirt for us, I would not have minded if GR had paid for him buit even better we got him free (+ Salary), nice to see that DG has decided to stay with us, perhaps he is beginning to feel the good vibes coming from the club.

P.s Well done to the U21’s for their 2 – 0 win against the foxes.

  • DaveMann says:

It’s the kit from 140 years ago .. I can just remember ! Kro

  • Mitchell says:

If Reading started tomorrow, the best team would be as follows in view of our present players:-
kuszczac, Caddis Morrison Spector Grounds, Davis Gleeson, Cotterill,Shinnie,Gray,Donaldson. Nothing new here, but it is where we are at. This team would fair ok,but against Reading we would struggle purely because of the new players they have brought in. They will be one of the favourites for a play off spot. However, if GR brings in the expected couple of signings he feels would benefit the squad then all could change. We didn’t get Pringle’but I still fancy the two from Swindon( Hylton and Byrne). However a gritty midfielder would be a gem- someone who could be a future cult hero for us. It’s just finding one.

    • Andrew says:

I’ve said this before about the team. We need at least one centre back one midfielder and one striker before the season starts minimum, preferably 2 of each just to stay at the same level. The team as you put it there is the same apart from better goalkeeper which is fine but with injuries it’s very weak who we have to bring in. Specter and gleeson aren’t good enough regulars. Team is weak.

  • Dave Mann says:

Mitchell, that’s about right with the team but will that team play reading ? Kro

  • Hillfield Blues says:

Great news on DG signing and well done GR and the club for convincing him it’s where his immediate future lies.
    Love the new strip too.

    • Shirley Blue says:

Great news about Gray’s new contract. He will not stay with us long term unless we get promoted but we will get at least another season out of him and he will go for a much bigger fee when he does. I don’t usually worry too much about the kit but I like the new one. At least it’s not another regurgitation of the penguin shirt and I think it looks quite classy.

  • Dave Mann says:

Weather we like it or not it’s a replica including the blue of the 1875 small heath alliance kit we started in and that’s fine by me on this occasion , let’s not slag it off when Blues have gone out to celebrate that fact and it looks ok though not to the taste of some fans but does it really matter? No so enjoy and look forward to the season and pre season starting at Nuneaton tonight ! Kto

  • BhamCityJulian says:

    I like the Thunderbirds shirt.
