Townsend to go?

Rumours have reached this website that Birmingham City have accepted a bid for third choice goalkeeper Nick Townsend from Barnsley FC.

Townsend, 20, has yet to play a first team game for Birmingham City but has made 31  appearances in two loan spells for Vanarama National League side Lincoln City.

Barnsley’s first choice keeper Ross Turnbull joined Leeds United on a free transfer on July 15 leaving the Tykes with 23 year-old Adam Davies and rookie Christian Dibble as their first team keepers and the signing of Townsend would boost their ranks significantly.

Townsend isn’t expected to figure in the Blues first team this season following the signing of Tomasz Kuszczak and Adam Legzdins and with Connal Trueman and Jake Weaver as backup the sale of Townsend may well be seen as good business for a position where Blues are well-stocked.

Townsend signed a two-year deal with Birmingham City in May of this year. The club have as yet declined to comment on the rumour.

With him only recently having signed a contract, surely a loan deal would be better for both player and club.

  • StaffsBlue says:

Well that one came out of the blue. I wouldn’t be surprised if he decided to move on though. He may have been expecting to be No.2 this season with Randolph and Doyle leaving. It must have been a tad disappointing for the lad to realise he’s no further on than last season. The move would make sense for the player, sadly.

  • Richard Granfield says:

I would be disappointed if Townsend leaves on a permanent deal. Nick is a Bluenose and more than that I believe he can become Blues first choice custodian in a couple of years.

  • I think there will be a few suprises before the window closes , Lowery and Griffith’s are looking good
Who else might be coming ,Liam palmer , matt done, fabbrini ,conor hourihane , florent cuveleir,Luke freeman, Robert hall ,Luke James..kro

  • andy says:

I have witnessed Kuszczak make 2 mistakes one at Nuneaton when he failed to deal with a corner and they should have scored, then the howler at Kiddy which gifted them the lead. I would hold onto Townsend just in case!

  • RichardM says:

Sorry to drift off point but can I just say how delighted I am with the new away kit!!
Love the modern take on the old 70’s Belgian flag away kit, really iconic, I hope they stick with it and it becomes synonymous with Blues as is the Albion Yellow & Green and Man City’s Red & Black.

  • Mitchell says:

If Barnsley sign Townsend permanently then obviously GR doesn’t want him full stop. Since watching Blues at Kiddy , the two Goalies are adequate but no more. What is more important is the defence, which looks to have gained a new strength in the way of Lowry. Forget Keirnan and the return of Edgar..just give me Lowry and Morrison, with Spector and Edgar as back up. This player is a rugged Vince Overson type with a big heart and a frame to ward off any dainty fancy Dan forward. He has a past of being a bit of a bruiser and refs are very much aware of him, but that’s what I like in him.Mark my words that by the end of the coming season he will be our ‘John Terry’.

  • Dave Mann says:

I was well impressed with him mitchell though it was only kiddy he looked good alongside Morrison. Kro

  • Tony says:

Will be interested to see what kind of fee Townsend brings in, cant imagine it ti be that much. As a keeper he was no more than Ok decent shot stopper but for me he lacks height but good luck to the lad.

  • Tony says:

    True Daniel we will see.

  • mark says:

should be our no2 at the very least another missed opportunity for one of our young goalkeepers if he should be shown the door……….

  • GreatDane says:

I think our main concern must be the lack of firepower if Donaldson gets injured. And I have noticed that le Fondre is up for graps….

  • Tony says:

Now your talking, I rate Fondre I think he could do well for us.

  • StaffsBlue says:

Tbh, although I’d love ALF to sign, I’d be astonished if we brought anyone of that level in. I think that basically, the players we’ve brought in so far, are about our level.

  • Dave Mann says:

And maybe young Gary would have to change is beloved formation to fit him in !! .. Can’t see it to be honest but the big one little one up front as worked over the years at Liverpool and Sunderland plus others but 4-4-2 it would have to be IMO . Kro

    • StaffsBlue says:

Have to agree, it would have to be 4-4-2. I’m old fashioned, I would always go with a big ‘un and a little ‘un, but I accept football has changed, for better or worse, is down to individual opinion. Maybe modern football uses one up front, because it’s not so easy anymore to find two players who can regularly score goals.

  • Adam True Blue says:

A bit off topic but has anyone else noticed that Bihl have taken another writ out to claim back 15.5% of its shares plus costs? Carson Yeung is being shown the door.. Kro

    • almajir says:

      Adam

Yes – and if you followed me on twitter you’d a)know I was writing something about it this evening (when I finish work) and b) had streamed a periscope video about it. If you want up to date news from me – SOCIAL MEDIA!

      • Adam True Blue says:

Yes I know thanks, but I am working away and its hard to keep tab. And I thought I was the first to see but Almajir beat me to it again. Sterling work as always. Kro

  • Blue Lizard says:

Bild newspaper reports (Germany)Blues rumoured to be in talks with Borrusia munchengladbach over Peniel Mlapa .6ft 5 striker cost of £500,00 and keen to move ?

  • Mitchell says:

I hear the news regarding the German 6ft. 5 striker. Perhaps it’s just a rumour but welcome nevertheless. Always good to have a fresh option on the bench. Still mulling over Kiddy game and really cannot emphasise enough as to where we are currently at with regard to holding our own in what will be a very tough Championship this season. It is littered with Premiership clubs who have fallen like ourselves mainly by not playing badly. Big difference is that unlike ourselves their parachute money will no doubt be reinvested in the playing side.Point of all this is to clarify the need to pull together and not expect the team to challenge. Negative-possibly but imo the team is a battling one but nothing more.

    • StaffsBlue says:

I mentioned a couple of weeks ago that our signings so far have been solid, but nothing to really excite the average fan. Personally, I’m still waiting to be impressed with a signing. I’m hoping that will change soon.

  • Dave Mann says:

Mlapa is a big striker who at 24 averages 1 goal in 8 games … I would think were give that one a miss! Kro

  • Tony says:

    1in 8? err no thanks

  • StaffsBlue says:

Tatts just said absolutely no truth in the Townsend rumour.

  • Tom says:

I went to the blues vs cobblers game tonight Lee Novak looked good Legzdins is shocking! And the German lad upfront was just as pants as Zigic hope we don’t sign him

  • Great to see the chat is back: Keep it coming Dan and all fans. “I have heard many a Blues Fan saying we could make the Play-Offs”. Not for me as I believe this season is all about consolidation we can’t possibly compete with the money others have. esp the Parachute Payments! Let’s Get real stay Loyal and And At some point soon we all hope celebrate the fact that we are Rid of Carson-Pannu-and their “Circus of Clowns” !!!
    Keep Right On-!
