Blues linked with Liam Feeney

Reports in Bolton state that Blues are competing with Ipswich Town for the signature of Bolton Wanderers’ out of contract winger Liam Feeney. The 29-year-old spent the end of last season on loan at Portman Road and is weighing up his options following the Trotters’ relegation from the Championship.

The Bolton News reports that Mick McCarthy has been in negotiations with Feeney, stating that:

“We’re talking to him and we’re talking to his agent,” McCarthy said at the end of the season. “I’d like him to stay and he would like to stay and if we can come to a mutually-beneficial deal then that’s what will happen. If we don’t, then we won’t.”

Feeney played nine times for Ipswich while on loan, scoring once. As he himself says, he’s a direct, pacy and hardworking player which is the kind of wide player I’d like to see come into the club but he’s a right winger and Blues are desperately short on the left.

I’ve not seen anything to say properly he is linked with Blues – and if Ipswich are struggling to come to an agreement with respect to wages it would be interesting to see how Blues fare in the same regard.

I tend to remember the players who’ve always played well against us and he’s definitely one of them.

  • ian ambrose says:

I saw youtube to Liam Feeney his right foot maybe he bit skill on the pitch ????

    • Bluey says:

But youtube is very skilled for BCFC with left foot.and slow, slow news on owners ??????? When young gone so slow, money for gary soon for promotion.

  • Richard Granfield says:

The questions to answer….Is he better than David Cotterill, Jacques Maghoma and Viv Solomon-Otabor? Is he on Gary’s list of 20 prospects. If the answers are yes then great.
I posted after the Bolton game at St Andrews’ that we should go for their outstanding young central defender Rob Holding. There are reports that Arsenal will bid for him so our chances are slim.

  • Rob says:

This was my shout when you did the competition in January for the next signing. It wasn’t just picked from thin air, it was on back then too. I know he spoke to GR, but can’t say I know why it never happened. Think he’ll be going Ipswich though now

  • StaffsBlue says:

We’ve been linked with about a dozen players in the last fortnight, but I can honestly say that none of them really floats my boat.

  • StaffsBlue says:

I think Tom Ross summed it up in the BM today: “the activity during the summer months will tell us a lot more about next season and where we should set the expectation bar.”

    • Hillfield Blues says:

Exactly. If we are only as good as some of the names being linked, then it’s going to be hard work again.

      • StaffsBlue says:

I can’t see any of the names mentioned so far improving us in any way. Let’s hope we hear better rumours over the coming days and weeks.

        • Dave Mann says:

And if the rumours are better then we have less chance of signing them .. True ? .. Unless we offer wages and transfer fees we can’t afford ! KRO

        • Dave S says:

Antonuchi (is that how it’s spelt) to me is a great shout, class act,bad ass attitude a la Costa. He would light up St Andrews in my very humble opinion
          KRO

          • Waycoolblue says:

Antonuchi To old only one year younger than Donaldson. Plus He don’t score goals He just runs abbot like a chicken. Yes he is hard working but if we want that we may as well keep Wes Tomas or Novak.

  • bhamcityjulian says:

We don’t need a right footed winger unless Cotterill is going to be cashed in. Maybe that’s the plan.

  • Dave Mann says:

I think Cotterill will go after the euros anyway so maybe that is the reason . KRO

  • Mirkwood55 says:

At the moment we are being linked with just about anyone who has kicked a football in the last few years!!!

  • steve says:

As they say,i’ll believe it when he’s stood on the Kop holding a Blues scarf.

  • Tony says:

Switch Cotterill to the lef,t there are lots of right footers who are effective on the left wing Ashley young being one

  • williammorgan says:

Some of the players mentioned to sign in the news are no better than the ones we have let go , GET A GRIP BLUES….

    • Mirkwood55 says:

This speculation is nothing to do with Blues. It’s all gossip, media speculation and social media frenzy. Like the man says – wait till we see a player actually holding a Blues shirt aloft before we believe anything!

  • Hillfield Blues says:

We want to be hearing Clough’,Tomlinss’ and Tesche’s but hey it’s early days.Im not holding my breath tbh.

    • StaffsBlue says:

Tbh, I think that’s my way of thinking too. It’ll be nice if we can get a couple of ‘names’ in, but I won’t be holding my breath.

  • Dave Mann says:

And they will be better .. Don’t hold your breath ! KRO

  • bhamcityjulian says:

My gut feeling and I am unanimous in this is that there will be a major overhaul of the squad. New right and left backs, Shotton and Tesche signed. Donaldson sold and replaced. Cotterill sold if he wants out.

  • Dave Mann says:

    My thoughts exactly KRO

  • steve says:

Looks like you were right about Xia’s claims about his controlling interest in 5 HKSE companoies Dan. Well done mate.Good work.

  • jazzzy786 says:

We don’t need another right winger. Feeney is a good player but we need to get a left winger, a lb, a cb, a fw and a box to box midfielder. With money so short we need to spend it wisely on positions we need filling.

  • bhamcityjulian says:

My other gut feeling is that Maxwell and Adams will breakthrough and challenge Gleeson and Davis respectively

    • Mitchell says:

Julian.I have seen Maxwell play often for Kiddy. He is imo in the mould of Hoddle. Vision, strong and clever. My concerns are that GR sees him as a possible defender. Wasted of a possible great midfielder. If Rowett and co.turn him into a defender then that will say it all for me with our manager. If Leicester or a West Ham had Maxwell they would see the obvious position for him.Forget the stale and has been Tesche-get this talent in now.

      • StaffsBlue says:

Wouldn’t it be nice to see the likes of Solomon-Otabor, Maxwell, Adams and Brown running our midfield? Might be a season or two away yet, but it’s an interesting thought.

As for Maxwell at centre back… we might as well put Callum Reilly at left ba… oh.

        • Mitchell says:

Yes Staffs it would be nice. However, this coming season I would create a midfield of three with MK-Maxwell-Davis. Gleeson,Adams as backups. Give VSO a regular wing start from week one.Confidence will grow.

          • StaffsBlue says:

Apart from that one goal, VS-O hasn’t really done a lot, but then, he hasn’t had a lot of game time. I think for the start of pre-season, VS-O should be given the right wing spot and let’s see how he goes with two or three 90 minutes under his belt. Cotterill will probably still be resting after the Euros, so a good chance to assess the lad.

          • Hillfield Blues says:

Robinsin in his new role helping Richard Beale in the development squad is quite a shrewd move.Having him getting into the likes of Brown and Arthur on a daily basis could be a good thing and give them the kick up the backside they need.

          • StaffsBlue says:

There’s no other player in the first team squad like Robbo. When he’s not playing, we have no leadership qualities in team at all… we’ve seen it time after time. The proof is in the amount of clean sheets he was part of. The thing is, although he had a much better season last season than the one before, there’s no way he’s going to play 20 games next season. He needs replacing. Good luck to him in his coaching career.

  • Bluey says:

If the names being bandied about are really targets for the club it tells me 2 things. 1) We`ve no chance of a promotion push next season imho and 2) the club has no expectations of notable investment in time to buy better quality players for aforementioned season.

    • StaffsBlue says:

With Rowett stating that he’s unlikely to be making signings early in the window and that we might have to wait to sign the players he wants… could he know something we don’t about funding? Could he be getting more money later in the window?

      • Hillfield Blues says:

I think the gist of it may have been Blues are not going to be able to offer the more desirable targets the better contracts initially. Those players/agents will want to shop around to see if they can get better offers elsewhere and those that cannot get fixed up will be floating around later in the summer.

  • Dave Mann says:

That’s what Ime hearing also staffs .. Money available later in the summer .. Sounds promising . KRO

  • Steve in Yorkshire says:

Being a bit hopeful I think Dave. Players of quality who are out of contract will be in no hurry as they will have plenty of suitors. The few clubs awash with cash could make a high take it or leave it offer, we clearly aren’t one of those clubs so will have to wait for scraps.

Not sure how much truth is in the Antenucci rumour, but Leeds ST holders hwo are mates of mine are basically saying he’s great to come on for 20 mins and maybe change a game. I pointed out that is just what we need, someone who can come off the bench and score. I’m not sure we can afford that luxury though realistically. Think it more likely we will go for a League 1 striker who is out of contract who has to prove themselves who could challenge Donaldson.
