Gossip Folks – The Transfer Rumour Mill (Summer 2012 Edition) Part IV

Blues added one more player to their ranks in the season-long loan signing of Ravel Morrison from West Ham United this week in the only transfer concerning the club this week. However, this hasn’t stopped the rumour mill which is starting to gear up again with the start of the season and the end of the transfer window fast approaching.

I’ve updated my spreadsheet and it’s available for you to look at here. It’s been a quiet week in the main, with a couple of recycled stories (Zigic to Mallorca, Vaughan from Norwich) coupled with a couple of new ones (Steve Watson in as a coach, Butland to Liverpool). Colin Tattum of the Birmingham Mail gets a gold star for being the only journo to go with the story of Ravel Morrison to sign for Blues, exclusively tweeting that the move was going to happen on Sunday night.

One story that has piqued my interest is this one from James Nursey stating that Zigic is refusing to move to an unnamed Turkish side cos of the money he is on at Blues with Nursey stating that the big Serb is now picking up a stonking 60k per week. This story, which was live on the Mirror website last night was preceded by this one from a Turkish site on Sunday which names Sivasspor as the side in question and pours doubt on the story, noting that the link came about because Sivasspor stayed in the same hotel as Blues in Austria. In short – don’t believe the hype.

If you’ve seen anything juicy that you think I might have missed please feel free to drop me a line and I’ll look into it further. I’m intending to put up the next installment of the spreadsheet up on Monday 13 August.

Love the lad but £60K a week FFS.

How long is left on his contract?

    • Trevor Honnor says:

      2 more seasons

    • nick wicky says:

Now he’s on £60kpw is he? The comments coming out of the club these days say they don’t want players looking for a pay day. they’ve just shown foster the door for asking for premier wages. It makes you wonder if hes really on premier wages at all and where al gets his sources from,, the money seems to go up every week! I’ve got serious doubts if theres anyone on premier wages at blues now,and if he doesn’t perform they’ll be showing him the door or cancelling his contract!

      • KeeprightCroydON says:

nicky wicky, not sure what he actually earns, but it is substantially more that any Championship player can expect. The difference between him and Foster is that it was easy to offload the latter cos clubs were prepared to meet the fee and his wage demands as he he has a longer shelf life as a keeper. Difference with Ziggy is that he’s over 30 and nobody wants to take on a striker whose best days are probably behind him, especially on the salary he’s on. His recent fitness record will also make potential suitors wary. I think Blues would like to offload him, but there are simply no takers. He has a right to see out his contract; one has to summise that Blues made a mistake by offering such a deal without relegation clauses. As the saying goes “act in haste, repent at leisure”.
Off course Ziggy may decide to take a wage cut to make a move possible, but I can’t really see that happening – unless he get no playing time at Blues which may make him think again.

      • almajir says:

Nicky – I didn’t say he was on 60k per week – Nursey did.

He is on a wedge though, and as TonyB rightly points out, you cannot just cancel a contract – to cancel a contract you have to pay off a player and they are within their rights to demand all monies due to them under the deal – so you’re talking £5m plus to do that with Ziggy

        • nick wicky says:

portsmouth are just talking about cancelling the contracts of players if they don’t take a pay cut because of their financial problems. i know blues are not in that trouble, but if they can do it?

          • almajir says:

Nicky, it might have escaped your attention but Portsmouth have been begging players to compromise on not receiving any of the cash that they are due to cancel their contract – and in the case of Tal Ben Haim, they are failing.

As I said previously, when a contract is cancelled a player is entitled to the remainder of the contract being paid up. 2 years on £50k a week (and I have no reason to disbelieve that Zigic isn’t on that) works out to £5million. Otherwise, it’s about negotiating a compromise agreement – and a player has no obligation to accept that.

  • motozulu says:

James Nursey can suck my stump.

I think all we need now is a bit more central defensive cover then we are about there.

  • RichardM says:

I must confess I haven’t seen anything of Butlland other than snippets of Team GB in the Olympics, but from what I did see he didn’t look anything special?? Given all the hype I was expecting to see a Joe Hart look alike between the sticks, but to me he looked nwervous and uncomfortable, and more than a little fallable. Please can someone tell me I’m talking out my a*** and this guy is a super star in the making ??

    • nick wicky says:

Richard you obviously can’t tell a good goalie from a bad one. The reason he was nervous was because the defenders in front of him were not doing their job properly. When they got their act together he looked class!

    • KeeprightCroydON says:

RichardM I think we must have been watching different keepers. I was very impressed with Butland. He did make a misjudgment with the goal conceded against S. Korea, but otherwise has been pretty sound. Off course he can’t be bracketed with Hart yet. He has a long way to go before he gets there, but he’s only 19. I wonder what Hart was like at that age. Give the guy some slack. The more game time he gets, the better he’ll get.

  • Alex T says:

I thought Joe, er I mean Jack Butland looked very good. He kept GB in the Senegal game…

Personally, I cant wait to see him between the sticks for blues.

P.s. Loving that comment re. James Nursey sucking stump! haha

  • TonyB says:

Talk of “cancelling” Zigic’s contract is plain daft. A contract ends when it reaches its end – i.e. 2014 or earlier if BOTH parties agree. We can’t just “cancel” Zig’s contract any more than Jack Butland could cancel his contract with us and walk away. Sorry to tell the majority of you how to suck eggs but some people don’t even grasp the basics!

  • Paul Carter - The Voice Of Reason says:

    100% agree mate

  • northfield says:

I couldn’t care what wages ziggy is on as long as he performs and cares.. which he clearly does!

    • nick wicky says:

northfield neither could I. I don’t believe he’s still on all that money, but even if he is if the fans get off his back then he could be prolific in the championship, and get blues promoted!

  • DoctorD says:

Nursey can’t even get his facts right. We got relegated in May 2011, not May 2010.

Also in his story about signing Ravel Morrison on loan, there’s this sentence below the headline:

“Bend over… cough… you’ll do! Hammers teen latest Lee Clark capture as new Blues boss continues St Andrew’s shake-up”

Does anybody know what the bend over thing is about? Is it some rude insinuation that I haven’t figured out.

    • Trevor Honnor says:

I think Nursey was trying to insinuate that Blues would sign anyone with a pulse or the ability to breathe.

I am actually surprised that in Almajir’s spreadsheet there isn’t an entry from Nursey saying something like this:

      Player Name: Unknown
      Buying Club: Unknown
      Fee: Undisclosed
      Newspaper: Daily Mirror
      Reporter: James Nursey

He almost managed it on 6th August with the token Zigic transfer.

  • jazzzy786 says:

Zigic is on 35k per week and not 55k or 60k as mentioned in the press. Still a lot though.

  • Paul Carter - The Voice Of Reason says:

    How do you know that?

  • TonyB says:

In some ways the Ziggy situation is similar to what happened with Marcus Bent, but in other aspects it is different. They both have/had contracts that paid them more than they are or were worth and more than the club could afford – most particularly the case with Zigic.

In that situation, other than at Portsmouth where it’s a case of take less or get nowt, no player is going to volunteer to take a pay cut or move to a club that will pay him less. I don’t think many of us would either.

The big difference is that Bent was hopeless and Zigic is quite useful (even if not worth £35/55k per week). That may be linked with the other difference which is that Zigic portrays a fondness for the club and its fans whereas no such feeling ever shone out from Bent.

If he were to leave I’d be quite glad we had redressed an imbalance in our pay structure. But if he stays I won’t let his excessive pay stop me supporting him as a Blues player.

    • nick wicky says:

TonyB if Ziggy is on £35-55k pw and pp has still managed to make a profit then the club must be able to afford his wages otherwise I’m sure knowing the way PP is he would have found a way of getting Zigic off the wage bill even if it was on loan. Zigic is a stiker with a proven scoring recordso there would be plenty of takers. He has a better goalscoring record than jerome, and stoke signed him. so what if hes younger if he can’t score?

  • mitchell says:

Nursey is a terrible journo – the vast majority of his articles are speculative and nothing more. Unless I hear it from OP or Tatts I don’t get too carried away.

  • Tom says:

What ever wage Zigic is on its to much a player of his abilitie should be no more than 10k a week i bet he was laugghing when blues brought him for 6 million all the way to England on a plane i would of had iv mugged this club off big time in my head, never have been a big fan of him so my opinons on Zigic isnt great. He cant run.. He cant jump and hes 6ft 8 or what ever.. he walks around the pitch in times when we need a goal or a good bit of play, with all the money problems at birmingham im supprised they havent just terminated his contract.. hes probs thinking im 30 now 2 years left on my contract 50k a week im never going to get that sort of money again. no one will pay a million for him let alone 50k a week, it just annoys me that the wages hes on we could have 2-3 players in the team instead, hes mugged Birmingham city off for ages now, may aswell get Nafti back put him upfront even better Tebily he was just as shocking!! i know Zigic scored 4 goals against Leeds last season but still in my eyes he useless excuse of a football player, if he goes out this season and gets 20 goals along side marlon and lover then my views on him next year might be different.. KRO

    • nick wicky says:

Tom it’s idiots like you that got on his back last year that stopped him scoring more goals. Zigic scored more goals than jerome in the premiership and scored the first goal in the carling cup win. Maybe if you got behind the guy and stopped going on about the amount of money that he might be earning he might score a lot more goals. he scored the first goal in the play-off semi final at st andrews against blackpool also. He is free from injury this year so get behind the guy and maybe he might score the goals that get blues promoted. If he’d been fit blues would have never been relegated, it was only cause we had to rely on crappy jerome to score the goals that blues went down!

  • Paulo says:

I reckon we’ve got Zigic and his pantomime cameos for a while yet. No one is going to match his wages as he isn’t a consistent goal scorer. In fact, one of the best matches I’ve seen him play was when CH dropped him back behind King and Ziggy really pulled a shift and got respect that game. Hate it when he stands there doing sod all.
..and Butland hasn’t even played a first team game in the championship yet!!!!!! (let alone the premiership), so none of us know how he is going to be in this league yet. …although he did a blinding save against Suarez didn’t he? So all the best to him and praise is due to PP for not selling him!
….Nursey???? WHO??? he can not only go and suck stumps …he will never be a patch on those journo’s who care about the clubs they write for, and give a toss about proper research as well. Nursey?? ….my arse!

  • Blue blood says:

I recon he is a useful squad player, get him in good shape & he will put in a consistent shift, I remember watching him play against Chelsea at home in the cup replay, he was starting to get reved up, splaying balls, having neat little ficks & dinks, then a few Chelsea players started to kick & stamp all over him, he lost his rag & faded into oblivion, but I suppose I’d rather have him playing for us as opposed to against us, get in the CAMEL LOL

  • nicky wicky says:

looks like blues are in for a windfall as scott dann is due to be sold to sunderland. he had a sell on clause in his contract didn’t he?

  • viperblue says:

Ziggy to Mallorca at reduced wages, why couldn’t have taken a cut to help us out
