Referee Watch – Lee Collins

Barring any late changes Lee Collins of Surrey will be in the middle for Blues’ game against Barnet at St Andrews tomorrow. Here is a look at his stats.

Season Performance (2011/12)

Last season was Mr Collins’ first as a referee in the English game. In twenty-five games he showed eighty-one yellow cards and six reds. He refereed games mainly in League One and League Two; however he did referee one game in the Championship – the 2-2 draw between Bristol City and Crystal Palace on St Valentine’s Day at Ashton Gate. In that game Mr Collins showed nine yellow cards – seven to Bristol City and two to Crystal Palace. He drew criticism from Bristol City manager Derek McInnes who complained of fouls in the lead up to the penalty that Crystal Palace won (which was scored by Blues new boy Darren Ambrose).

Last Blues Game Refereed

Mr Collins has not refereed us before.

Last League Cup Game Refereed

Mr Collins has not refereed a game in the League Cup before.

Whilst he is relatively new to refereeing, Mr Collins was in the middle for a Next Gen youth team game between Ajax and Internazionale last season that saw an Inter defender banned for nine months for abusing Mr Collins. Simone Percorini was seen to be verbally protesting to the ref after the conclusion of the penalties that decided the match, although he made no physical contact. However, it was decided Percorini was overly aggressive and thus he was handed the long ban.

I don’t mean to criticise, but when you say that last year was his first season in the English game, don’t you mean it was his first season in the English Football League? Unless he’d transferred from a different FA where he was already well qualified, it’d be impossible for someone to just start their refereeing career at Football League level. He’ll probably have bags of experience at non-league level or as an assistant in FL games.
