International Blues – A Mixed Bag
It’s been a mixed bag for the five Birmingham City players involved in international football this last couple of days.
Jack Butland kept a clean sheet in England u21’s 1-0 win over Serbia u21 in their playoff match for the right to go to the European u21 Championship finals in Israel next year at Carrow Road. Barring a shaky moment very early on when it looked like the young keeper had lost track of where the edge of his area was as he went to pick up a loose ball, it was a fairly quiet game for Butland. His clean sheet means he is still yet to concede a goal on English soil for the u21 team.
Keith Fahey played 51 minutes as the Republic of Ireland went down 6-1 to Germany at the Aviva Stadium in Dublin. Fahey started in a central midfield three but came off for Shane Long early in the second half as the Boys in Green fell to their heaviest defeat in forty years.
Will Packwood has racked up two ninety minute appearances for the USA u20 side in the Marbella Cup. After a 2-1 defeat to Canada in their opening game, the Americans came back to win 2-0 against a Scotland u21 side that had Fraser Kerr (who is currently on loan to Motherwell from Blues) in central defence. Packwood played both of his games in the heart of the US defence.
Jonathan Spector hasn’t been selected in the match squad for the USA side to face Antigua and Barbuda in their CONCACAF World Cup qualifier taking place at the Sir Vivian Richards Stadium in North Sound which is due to kick off at midnight Saturday our time.
In other news Foday Nabay has been called up to the England u16 team for the Victory Shield fixture against Wales u16 taking place on Thursday November 1 at the ground of Port Talbot FC. The fourteen year old who was originally born in Sierra Leone signed a new deal with Blues in the summer and has featured in the u18 side for Blues this season.
