The Carson Trial – Day 30

Carson was back in court today for a shortened hearing as his trial on five counts of money laundering entered its thirtieth day.

Early reports from Apple Daily (Cantonese only) state that an expert witness for the defence gave evidence today, building a picture of Carson’s wealth prior to the time in question. The witness confirmed that Carson trained as a hairstylist in Britain and in France and ran a hair salon in the exclusive Peninsula Hotel in Tsim Sha Tsui, Hong Kong earning HKD8-10millon from an initial investment of HK$3million.

Oriental Daily adds that Mr Ian Robinson, the expert witness, had not seen the documents cited but had reached his conclusions from Carson’s testimony and from then asking others such as his wife about prices to make sure it seemed reasonable. Mr Robinson added that he didn’t believe Carson was a money launderer due to his high profile nature and the perceived need for a launderer to keep things quiet.

The case resumes Tuesday July 2 at 9:30am (2:30amBST).

I will be writing a full precis of the last two weeks or so of evidence for publication tomorrow.

Update 01:00BST June 29
