Solihull Moors v Blues Development Squad Preview

Birmingham City’s development squad take on Solihull Moors at the newly renamed Autotech Stadium in their latest pre-season friendly tonight.

With the first team having lost 4-2 to Shrewsbury at the Greenhous Meadow last night it’s the turn of the young guns tonight to get a run out in the run-up to the new season in the Professional Development League. It’s the first chance Blues fans will have to see some of the younger Blues professionals with the previous friendlies having been behind closed doors.

I think one of the big points of interest is if Marlon King and Peter Lovenkrands will continue to feature for the development squad, having been seemingly frozen out of all first team action whilst Lee Clark looks to offload their wages from his squad. I think it’s likely both will play; both will need to continue improving their fitness after issues at the end of last season and it would be a good chance to prove to interested clubs that they are ready to go.

Personally, I’ll also be on the lookout for some of the younger professionals who haven’t featured in the last couple of friendlies to see how much they have improved over the last few months – James Fry in the centre of defence, Liam Truslove in midfield and Reece Hales who plays up front could all feature, whilst I think players like winger Demarai Gray and midfielder Kwadwo Bonsu-Asamoah will be looking to showcase their talents further to enhance their chances of pushing towards pro contracts.

Blues will also feature former player Marcos Painter, who is training at Wast Hills to maintain his fitness whilst he looks for another club after being released by Brighton at the end of last season.

The match kicks off at 7:30pm and tickets cost £5 for adults, £2 for concessions whilst u12s will get in for free. For those who can’t make it I’ll be producing updates on twitter during the game and I’ll be publishing my thoughts on it in the early hours of tomorrow morning.
