Solihull Moors v Blues Development Squad Preview
Birmingham City’s development squad take on Solihull Moors at the newly renamed Autotech Stadium in their latest pre-season friendly tonight.
With the first team having lost 4-2 to Shrewsbury at the Greenhous Meadow last night it’s the turn of the young guns tonight to get a run out in the run-up to the new season in the Professional Development League. It’s the first chance Blues fans will have to see some of the younger Blues professionals with the previous friendlies having been behind closed doors.
I think one of the big points of interest is if Marlon King and Peter Lovenkrands will continue to feature for the development squad, having been seemingly frozen out of all first team action whilst Lee Clark looks to offload their wages from his squad. I think it’s likely both will play; both will need to continue improving their fitness after issues at the end of last season and it would be a good chance to prove to interested clubs that they are ready to go.
Personally, I’ll also be on the lookout for some of the younger professionals who haven’t featured in the last couple of friendlies to see how much they have improved over the last few months – James Fry in the centre of defence, Liam Truslove in midfield and Reece Hales who plays up front could all feature, whilst I think players like winger Demarai Gray and midfielder Kwadwo Bonsu-Asamoah will be looking to showcase their talents further to enhance their chances of pushing towards pro contracts.
Blues will also feature former player Marcos Painter, who is training at Wast Hills to maintain his fitness whilst he looks for another club after being released by Brighton at the end of last season.
The match kicks off at 7:30pm and tickets cost £5 for adults, £2 for concessions whilst u12s will get in for free. For those who can’t make it I’ll be producing updates on twitter during the game and I’ll be publishing my thoughts on it in the early hours of tomorrow morning.

Be ironic if Lovenkrands and King save our season. I can’t see us doing much in this league with loan and cast off players.
domt read to much into friendleys, but chuffed about finally getting ferguson back.KRO.
Once again, it’s the defensive side that needs to be sorted out.. and quick.
I thought the defence was a bit lopsided last night, as we had 3 left footers in Robinson, Burn and Davis. If we don’t get it sorted pdq, we’ll spend most of the season playing catch-up again. We look fine going forward, but do we still have the players to pull us back from 2 or 3 goals behind all the time? Not sure.
I hope to see more of the youngsters coming through this season… maybe Lee Clark will be allowed to keep one or two this time.
It should have been us…?

Out of the frying pan and it to the wok!
Yu’s consortium were obviously very serious & knew Pannu
Personally but still could not make any headway.
So what chance anybody else ?
I see King, Lovenkrands, Mullins and Ambrose have been given squad numbers, but McGurk, Davis and Little have not.
Does this mean they are surplus to requirements?
Only players with contracts have numbers. McGurk, Little and Davis are trialists and have not yet been offered deals – and probably won’t be offered deals.
Same problems last night Ball over the top catching the cenral defenders, two full backs bombing on down the flanks getting caught out. All to familiar
You’re absolutely right. The times Davies and Caldwell were done over their heads last season were numerous. I also mentioned similar about Caddis, being caught out of position and being done the same. I read an interview with Mitch Hancox when he signed his new contract… and from what he was saying, he was aware of this and recognised it as one of the things he had to work on.
Let’s hope they sort it asap.
Is it too early for Clark Out…? :-)
3-5-2 or 4-4-2 or 4-3-3 weve got hull saturday to work it out but were always concede goals
with doyle playing, so come watford strongest 11, randolph in goals no more tinkering and
everything will be fine, trust me! KRO.
Cmon Shabba my money’s on you scoring tonight. Great to see Fergy back. I think LC should abandon the 352 and stick to 433.
Clark won’t be in charge tonight, it’ll be Richard Beale.
Supposedly there’s a friendly, I’m assuming is a PDL/Youth side, against Pelsall Villa on the 30th. It’d be held at the Old Bush Ground in Pelsall, behind The Old Bush pub. The’s a load of posters up in the village about it but I can’t find any other info on it.
almajir;, Not heard mention of young Townsend lately, ?. Do you know where he is, ?.
Come to that, !!. Gnahore as well, ?.
Potentially both playing tonight. They are both kids still…
Thanks for that, Matey,!!.
