Who is Wang Lei?

Back in December, I wrote about how a mysterious individual by the name of Wang Li had taken control of U-Continent and had become the second largest shareholder in BIH and by extension BCFC.

We now know from disclosures made to the HKSE that the person’s name is correctly spelled Wang Lei – but those disclosures don’t give us any more information on the person than that. However, following some digging via various sources I have access to in Hong Kong, I’m now in a position to confirm exactly who Wang Lei is.

Is it Carson’s wife?

The good news is that Wang Lei is definitely not Carson’s common-law wife Joanna Wang Manli (aka Wang Lifei).

The bad news is that Wang Lei is actually her brother, who lives with Joanna, her mother and father, her sister and the kids in Carson’s house on Barker Road in Hong Kong.

That’s bad isn’t it?

I have to admit, I think this is worse news than his son being on the BCFC board or his brother-in-law being on the BIH board. As a director, there are fiduciary responsibilities and you are answerable to the shareholders and regulatory bodies – and should you act improperly, you can be removed and banned from being a director.

As a shareholder though, you’re not answerable to anyone in the company. Assuming that Wang Lei is working in tandem with Carson (which is a reasonable one bearing in mind U-Continent also wrote to call an EGM at the same time Carson did), Carson has a voting bloc of around 44% of the shares – in other words, he has almost complete control of voting. As major shareholders, they are entitled to ask for an EGM (as they have) and they can use this power to get rid of people who are problematic and bring in their own stooges.

What can be done?

I’m continuing in my efforts to get the SFC to recognise that there appear to be clear breaches of the rules – that Carson is acting as a shadow director and exerting undue influence over the company from a prison cell. There are rules about shareholders working in concert and the SFC can impose sanctions against shareholders if they believe that is happening.

What is helpful is that BIH themselves are trying to make the same enquiries. When they made it public that Carson and Wang Lei had sought an EGM, BIH made it clear that they had written to both Carson and Wang Lei to find out their relationship, and had raised their concerns with the SFC themselves. They had yet to receive an official reply but I have no doubt whatsoever that they have the same information I have and the same understandable concerns.

I would just like to official thank Carson, Penn, BIHL and everyone else in this farce…Thank you because I haven’t had to endure shitty eastenders and corrie soaps with the missus for ages. Instead we just go online to places like news now and my favorite OP to get our daily dose of up to date, current and at times hilarious soap opera that is BIHL and son (little pun). But in all serious got say great job Rowey and the boys for showing us what blues are really all about, Keeping Right On

  • Art says:

Another great article Dan and let’s hope the net is closing in on Carson and his cronies. The club is going nowhere until we get rid of the prime cause of its current demise-Carson and Pannu.

  • Peter Bates says:

The continuing soap opera that is bihl never stops as in all good soaps there’s a train crash waiting to happen with many casualties lets hope the script sees the main characters got rid of ie cy p pannu and the cy family but all good soaps never end and I see bcfc being more and more pulled into the mire my one hope is that the good work done by panos and Gary rowett doesn’t see them walking off into the sunset I would hate to see messages of good luck at another club for gr lets hope the sfc and hkse see through cy and his cronies and impose proper penalties and rid our club of this disease that is bihl kro all

  • Dave mann says:

I don’t know what the problem is!! ..what’s wrong with a nice family run club like blues where everyone in the family is involved and respected by all the many blues fans everywhere…you’ve got to love them haven’t you?. Lol&kro

  • Bluenosesol says:

Just a quick observation. When Pannu was engaging in his rants, he happened to mention that there was a hole in the accounts to the tune of £1.8m. He advised that the loss of this amount of money was sufficient to bankrupt the club by January. If that is or is not the case, then surely now, if PP knows his onions, the misappropriation of a further £2.5m will certainly lead to bankruptcy if PP’s logic is followed?? KRO!!

When I was a kid always wanted a cowboy outfit, now we have one owning our club, but it’s no joke!

  • anolden says:

We have all been conned by Daniel he has created a world based upon a group of villainous eastern characters and an english football club in order to show that he has the talent to be a writer of fiction. Well he has proved to me he has the skill. However most budding authors make the mistake of over doing the plot, but I believe that he will progress and make his scenes rather more realistic, however he has proven that he has the skill to show that a career as a writer of fiction is a certainty.

  • ChrisG says:

What I don’t understand is, why are the HKSE taking so long in making a judgment on this when it’s clear as day for everone to see what is going on

  • Agent McLeish says:

Didn’t Pannu allegedly make threats towards an auditor around the time that this money was alleged to go missing? I’m only going on what was reported here at the time http://www.birminghammail.co.uk/incoming/birmingham-city-chief-peter-pannu-3182817

  • darren says:

    HI Dan

I have heard that the sale has been stalled because of the upturn in form and the owners think we might get in the prem – which would mean the club would be worth more? long shot I know for them. u heard this dan?

Classic victims of success, maybe we need to get clark back for a few weeks to remove this hope and get new owners

  • Dave says:

Dan, great work mate, keep chipping away at the muck. You’re doing a far better job at investigative reporting than the Birmingham Mail (and most other newspapers!) could dream of, they just seem content with printing photos of fans

  • DoctorD says:

Daniel — I think Carson has slipped up here. Like in chess, he has moved the wrong piece into the firing line and has exposed himself to attack. I wonder if he did this knowing the consequences, whether he did it but didn’t realise the consequences, or was just badly advised. Either way, it doesn’t look good for him. Finally, there is something concrete for the authorities to get their teeth into.

    • Hillfield Blues says:

Agree. He’s looking more exposed by the day and it seems every move he makes is being scrutinised by different authorities everywhere. Don’t kid yourself that he couldn’t be so stupid as to place himself in such a vulnerable position. His reckless disregard for the authorities is what put him in the slammer in the first place.

  • anolden says:

Earlier today I sent in a comment about {yours]] Daniels work and sought to suggest that this was all fiction to create a a world of myth based on oriental characters. Well after I sent It remembered i
a famous fictional detective Dr Fu manchu. who was portrayed in very early films . The named author was given as Sax Rohmer He was really Arthur Henry Sarsfield Ward A man of no education
born in1883 in Birmingham the son of Irish immigrants No one ever remembers him but his creation became world wide . I send this to you to show the connection which you may find of interest while of course sadly that your writing is all too sadly true

    • oldburyblue says:

My intellectual capacity is obviously insufficiently developed to understand your point anolden. Are you complimenting Daniel or criticizing him for his reporting?

  • Tony E says:

Has CY made a big mistake, doesn’t Wang Lei hold enough shares to request the egm without CY getting involved at that stage. Then when it came to the vote CY supports Wang Lei’s proposal, but as it is not his proposal he is just a shareholder exercising his right to vote without exposing himself for the shadow director he obviously is. This way he has clearly exposed himself to scrutiny by the authorities.

  • Bluenosesol says:

Just wandering, as a prisoner of the Chinese authorities would CY be banned from entering the UK if he turned up at a UK airport?

    Owners and Directors Test –
2.4 No Person may acquire any Holding in a Club if, pursuant to the law of the United Kingdom or the European Union:
•(a) he is prohibited from entering the United Kingdom

    BOOM!!!!

    • BhamCityJulian says:

At the moment he is not an ‘Owner’ (he has under 50.01% and not a ‘Director’, so he is not eligible for the test

      • Adam True Blue says:

Who is our owner? I know we are listed as being owned by Bihl, but who is our ‘current’ owner, who owns Bihl, from what I understand it is by majority the Yeung Family! kro.

      • Bluenosesol says:

Julian, it says nothing about owners. This section of the rukes states that you cannot have a holding in a club if you are barred from entering the UK. He has a 28% holding and he is definitely barred by virtue of his record and imprisonment

  • Paulant says:

We can whine and moan all we like, the cowboys ain’t going anywhere. If you bought an house for £80mil your not going to sell it for £20 or £30mil are you. The BIH camp is split in 2, the good and bad guys. Let’s hope the good guys win and we slowly move forward. The good news I suppose is that it’s open warfare now and we know more thanks to Dan than we ever did. Let’s just put it behind us for Saturday and show some of our players who have never seen 30,000 fans In their entire career what St Andrews was like once upon time and will be again. KRO!!

  • rhees says:

Surly the sfc have got enough to start properly digging

  • Hillfield Blues says:

With HKSE,FL and the SFC all over him it will be interesting to see if BIHL/BCFC hold as much appeal to CY. It must be clear to him by now that he isn’t going to be able to get as much control over the situation as perhaps what he is used to anymore.

  • Richard r says:

Are the hkse and. SFC doing something about this or just overlooking this mess

  • Oldbluenose says:

Daniel,. As doubtless you already know, — Birmingham Mail, are now saying yet another £700,000, is also missing, Can you cast further light, Mate.

  • Eric says:

NEWS FOR THOSE LOOKING FOR INVESTMENT: BEWARE HONG KONG. STUDY DAN’S BOOK AND THE RESULTANT IMPACT ON OUR FOOTBALL CLUB. KRO

  • Blue Lizard says:

Eardley to Orient for a months loan…..pity it couldn’t be longer!!!

  • Raymondo says:

Let’s hope he does it before we have a transfer embargo slapped on us by the Football League because of all this BIH wrangle and behaviour by CY and family.

  • waycoo6 says:

It may just be a coincidence but a bid came in for Gray and then BHL announced loses to a similar amount. And now a fresh bid is made and BHL announce there are more loses bringing the loses up to the amount of the second or third bid made for Demarai Gray. I maybe reading to much in to this but it seems to me that BHL want to find a excuses to sell our players. If Gray is sold they will say they had no choice but to sell due to the lost money and the need to balance the books.
and then they will withdraw there claim to the HKSE as they would have got the money to pay off the crooks that control the club.

  • AussieBlue says:

Good detective work Dan but wasn’t that Barker Rd house where Carson’s “Wife, sister, kids, mother and brother” foreclosed on and reposessed?? On what basis are they still living there?

  • AussieBlue says:

BTW, a list of former billionaires serving time in prison shows 40% of them are from Hong Kong, Macau or China. Most indiscretions also involve bribery attempts. Bribery seems a way of life to make problems go away in this region. So, why should we not suppose that an auditor would not be bribed or induced into being less than throrough with accounts?

  • Blue Lizard says:

Wonder if Yeung is bribing other inmates in prison to stay away from his rusty sheriffs badge???

  • Sean Luke says:

I really think that your information is very good, I also think that you have Blues at heart. What I do not understand is this reporting is in the clubs interest or yours? I read with intrege regards your fist fight with Peter Pannu, who was the winner here, yourself or Birmingham City Football Club ? You knew there was a vote iminent regarding his status with BIHL therefore why did you not wait ? Now you are diiging in situations that do not have a direct consequence of the club. I am not knocking you but I do feel you need to be very careful were you are taking this because there is only one loser. If you feel you are right I respect that, but I have a gut feeling there is more good being poured on you than the club.

    • almajir says:

Not sure what you’re driving at Sean.

Firstly, the Pannu thing. It was he who commented on here, in spite of his refusal to answer questions put to him or to answer fans concerns. When he finally responded under his own name I made those comments clear for everyone to read – without any editing or comment – for people to make up their own minds. The fact he divulged inside information is his fault; not mine – likewise the fact it led to the shares in BIH being suspended is his fault, not mine.

It was never about “picking a fight” – I’ve always felt that people need to be given all the information available to allow them to make up their own mind; the vote was immaterial as I knew he would be re-elected – I’m more concerned his conduct stands up to scrutiny when it comes to the regulatory bodies and the fact that more and more crap seems to be unearthed from his watch as CEO/MD is worrying – but again, if he has done wrong it’s his fault for doing it – not mine for exposing it.

I think in all you miss the point – whether I report what has gone on is immaterial; if actions have happened that bring the club into disrepute it’s ultimately that that is the problem; the only thing reporting it does is bring truth into the open. You say that there is only one loser but I don’t think you even know why the club would be a loser – in my eyes, if the club can move forwards to an ownership which is more transparent and open and which is able to attract investment then the club wins – yes, there may be some short term pain but I think that is now inevitable; at least if we’re ready for it we can deal with it better.

      • Sean Luke says:

I take on hoard what you are saying and accept it, I am not trying to decry you or put you down in anyway. To state you knew he would be reelected then you are saying the whole vote was irrelevant, the fact is you did not know; you took your information for fact, which is fundamentally wrong, although you were right.
I am giving my honest opinion to a blog that encourages this. The only thing I was getting at is this site is now the main source for information with even the national media taking quotes and information from it, dont leave yourself open and as we are doing well under Rowett, I feel your timing could be better. Keep up the good work.

  • AussieBlue says:

BluLiz – you can bet his status and protection will prevent any such intrusions.
