GAMEDAY – Derby Away

Blues head to Derby today to face a Rams side that dropped two points in the corresponding fixture last year after conceding two goals in injury time, infuriating the home support. Can Blues go one better this year?

Derby

Derby go into this fixture in third place, nine points ahead of Blues and chasing the automatic promotion slots. They’ve not lost a home game since August and have only lost one game in their last 11 in all competitions.

George Thorne is back in contention after injury while Richard Keogh could play in a mask after breaking his nose in midweek.

Blues

Loanee Will Buckley could make his debut as David Cotterill’s hamstring woes continue, keeping him out of the side for another month. Gary Rowett has confirmed that three or four players have minor knocks and it could be that young Charlee Adams is given a spot on the bench as cover.

Ref

Tim Robinson is in charge of this game, having taken charge of 22 games so far this season, showing 80 yellow cards and two reds. His last Blues game was the Capital One Cup game against Cambridge United in which David Davis was the only Blues player to receive a caution.

Suspension Watch

One red card (three match suspension served): James Vaughan

8 Yellow Cards: Maikel Kieftenbeld
5 Yellow Cards: Jonathan Grounds
4 Yellow Cards: David Davis, Jon Toral, Stephen Gleeson and Paul Caddis
3 Yellow Cards: David Cotterill and Paul Robinson
2 Yellow Cards: Jonathan Spector, Michael Morrison, James Vaughan and Neal Eardley
1 Yellow Card: Tomasz Kuszczak, Clayton Donaldson, Andy Shinnie, and Shane Lowry

The cutoff date for 5 yellow cards to attract a suspension is November 30, 2015
The cutoff date for 10 yellow cards to attract a suspension is April 9, 2016

My suggestion to Gary is to discard Tuesday’s defensive 4-5-1 formation and revert to the tried and tested and more attacking formation of 4-2-3-1.
The reason being that Derby have a far greater goal threat than Forest and I cannot see us defending for 90 minutes without conceding unless we offer something going forward.
Therefore my starting eleven would be :-
    Kuszczak
    Caddis, Morrison, Robinson, Grounds;
    Gleeson, Kieftenbeld;
    Buckley, Toral, Maghoma;
    Donaldson.

  • Pods says:

This is going to be a very tough game, as Derby have dropped out of the automatic promotion position and with Burnley winning last night and starting to gain momentum.
What are Blues chances, I believe we have to be at our very best to get anything from this game. We also need to keep in touch with play off positions.
I’m having to say this may not be our day.
What are my fellow supporters have to say

  • Art Watson says:

    I feel a big defeat coming on.x

  • Charlie says:

Positive then? I think we could scrap a scrappy draw

  • Rarry Gowett says:

Interesting how you breezed over the matter of Will Buckley? Where did he miraculously come from?! Looks like Rowett preferred your option of “sh*t” as opposed to getting “off the pot”…I think you should just delete that garbage you posted yesterday and do us all a favour.

  • paule says:

You never know in this division I think on their day anyone can beat anyone so lets keep our fingers crossed and hope today is ours, after listening to Gary Rowett on Tom Ross’s goal zone he is hoping to bring in a couple more players which if they turn out like the ones he brought in last season could get us in to a play off position!! KRO

  • KC says:

As ever Dan,many thanks and Happy Saturday all. Let’s hope no silly fights outside the ground like last year!

  • Shirley Blue says:

We didn’t expect to get anything at Boro and they are a better side than Derby who will be going all out for the 3 points. Never know we might get them on the break. A draw would be a good result.

  • Dave Mann says:

On my way to Derby now so fingers crossed and let’s ALL pull together and give the team our full support . KRO

  • Spot on R G to keep up with high scoring teams you need to compete or else we will get left behind , I feel a big win coming on , come on you Bluenoses we are getting there , make your families proud of you ,….KRO. . super blues

  • Ali Duncan says:

Did the 2-2 last season and, Bolton aside, it was the most exciting finish to a league game I’ve ever been at. We were so poor and got something. Sadly Derby are a different animal now and I think we’ll lose heavily.

  • Spot on R G to keep up with high scoring teams you need to compete or else we will get left behind , I feel a big win coming on , come on you Bluenoses we are getting there , make your families proud of you ,….KRO. . super blues ..

  • StaffsBlue says:

I think our wingers will be key today. If Derby have a weakness, it’s at full back. Let’s hope Buckley and Maghoma can test Warnock and Christie… if they’re selected.

    • StaffsBlue says:

… also, Donaldson will probably have a tough game against Shackell and Keogh today. I hope Toral can get closer to The Don to feed off what balls he does win.

  • Mitchell says:

Vaughan due a goal likewise Donaldson. Law of averages for me today blues 2-0.

  • StaffsBlue says:

I’m hoping Sheff Wed don’t beat Leeds today. Need to keep them in reach.

  • Richard Granfield says:

Charlie Austin has joined Southampton “For around £4m”. It is an incredible deal for a striker who scored 18 Premier League goals in a relegated team last season.
    Puts Gray’s fee in perspective!

  • DoctorD says:

    Derby 2 Blues 1 HT – 1-0

  • Dave Mann says:

DoctorD your medicine is not appreciated , keep taking the tablets , reverse that score and you might be right . :-) KRO

    • StaffsBlue says:

I’ll still go 1-1, but f we can frustrate them, the crowd might start getting on their backs. Hopefully, they’ll then start to make mistakes. That could help us nick something.

  • Bluenosesol says:

I recall playing Palace away the year they got promoted. We were given no chance. Now what was the score??? I predict a shock hammering of Derby today!!

  • Dave Mann says:

    1-2 .:-) KRO

  • Richard Granfield says:

Unchanged lineup, which means no No.10 and 4-5-1 and an isolated Donaldson.

  • Zimblue says:

It depends on how and where we park the bus. Shut all the doors and windows and defend like it really matters and then 0-0.

  • Dave Mann says:

Zimblue,go to more away games .KR0

  • Zimblue says:

Very tricky being 10,000kms away Dave.

  • He who dares,????? no medals fist half then , you have to be in it to win it ,…..SHOOT, glad its half time..

  • Dave Mann says:

Not impressed what so ever , crap performance and kieftenbelds goal was a shambles … Need massive improvement to make the playoffs .. At least we won’t get relegated . KRO

  • bluenosesol says:

Guys, keep the faith. Derby, Ipswich and Boro all slipped up tody. We are back in the hunt!!

  • steve says:

Unbelievable. Expect a Dear Daniel on Monday.

  • Dave Mann says:

Travelling back on the coach now and can’t get myself out of this hole Ime in , very depressed and no positives what so ever , a trully desperate performance , ashamed at our lack of realistic attitudes towards our underated team and crap manager , it’s time to support team at these difficult times . KRO

  • steve says:

On the coach ? you mean you don’t travel on the trains with the real supporters and drink with the real fans ? Plastic Dave

  • Dave Mann says:

No I travel on the real coaches not the blues coaches where you drink till you drop you moron with real blues supporters you plastic imitation . KRO

    • steve says:

I’ve been to more games than you can imagine. i was watching blues when you was sucking your moms tit.

      • Dave Mann says:

Well if your that old start acting your age you stupid moronic idiot , I’ve been to more away games than you’ve done home games dumb ass so button it fat head.

        • Mitchell says:

Why do you bite Dave? This guy couldn’t tie your laces. Be a bit arrogant with him.

          • Dave Mann says:

Ofcourse your right Mitchell it’s just that Steve had a bite at me with no provocation what so ever , I’ve also propably been on more trains to away games than him also so he dares to question my allegiance and call me plastic , we all know he’s a prat so I will leave it there ….. Anyway on a serious note it was another fine second half away performance and played Derby off the park , we are now right back in the picture and if people think we can’t make the playoffs it means you were not at Derby yesterday , we were better than them end off no argument .. Cheers for the back up mate . KRO

    • steve says:

The irony of that post :).

  • Derby are a top top side , let’s not forget that , this win was deserved by blues , people keep saying that we are punching above our weight , opposition managers keep saying that they were unlucky and should have won , well all heroes punch above their weight that is what makes them heroes , so get the medals out . …SUPER BLUES…

    • StaffsBlue says:

The opposition managers are talking bollox. If we’d won all the games we’ve deserved to win this season, we’d be in the play-offs already. We were maybe punching above our weight earlier in the season, but now these players have grown into a proper team. Another addition or two to bolster all the good work so far and we’ll have a real chance of finishing in the top 6.

      • Shirley Blue says:

And we have won a few games we probably didn’t deserve to too. Reading when they missed a last minute penalty. Cardiff when we got a penalty after the guy got the ball in the face. It evens itself out over time. We are about where we deserve to be. I would just like it if certain people got off the back of a manager who is doing a great job for us. He said he would get three players in during this window – he has signed two so far both with Premier League experience – Vaughan and Buckley neither of whom were even needed today and there is still nearly two weeks left to get more. There was some utter bollux spouted on here yesterday about his apparent failure to get players in and those who did spout are looking really stupid now.

        • Hillfield Blues says:

Result of the season without a doubt and nobody seen that coming.Fulham wasn’t a one off and even Boro were lucky to get a point. We’re dangerous away from home.
However harsh Dans words were yesterday I agreed with his point and today’s result only reinforces the need to get some quality players in to strengthen our push for the playoffs. We need at least 2 premier league standard signings before the deadline if we are going to stay in the mix.

      • steve says:

If we deserve to lose then GR says we deserved to lose. It annoys me when we don’t get the credit we deserve. we were brilliant today. It wasn’t a freak result.

  • HvalaObafemi says:

Get in. I think it’s fair to say that Gary can stay on the pot.

  • .KC says:

Great atmosphere in that magic corner Blues fans. GR and the boys got it so right. All heroes. Just love Toral,s style and confidence to try different things , but they were all brilliant.

  • Spot on staffs blue …KRO

  • ChrisG says:

I said the other day that when we play like we know we can play then we’re a match for anyone in this division & man did they play well today & at least when we were 2-0 up we didn’t f*** it up, we went & scored again, unbelieveable.

  • steve says:

Stats prove that we were the better side. agree about the atmosphere, not as good as Fulham but brilliant anyway.

  • David L says:

    Sublime stuff.
Apart from the strangely passive display at Hull, the way we play away is a joy to watch.
Not just today, but Preston and Fulham to name 2 more

That would certainly grace the division above.

So, my only worry is Plan B. Our control and counter attack plan A is great. Our plan B for dealing with poor teams like Huddersfield, Charlton and Rotherham at home – not so good.

But as someone else once said in a totally different context “rejoice at the news”. It feels good to be a blues fan tonite.

  • Ali Duncan says:

Didn’t go today but agree with agree with David L, the way we play away is a pleasure to watch. Was at Burnley, Fulham, Preston and Franchise and the way we set ourselves up, move the ball around, defend and counter is excellent. Something about the way we play away that needs to be channeled into the playing at home mentality.

  • Markymark says:

Just returned from an epic away day, brilliant result fantastic performance

We might not get promoted, we might not even make the playoffs but i dont care, watching the blues right now is a joy and makes me proud to be a bluenose. And to all those who continue to look for negatives go support the vile KRO

  • Womble Joe says:

    In Rowett we trust

A brilliant manager getting the best out of a patchwork side

    Love him

  • BhamCityJulian says:

My understanding of the Buckley deal is that we have the option of turning it to an end of season loan bit there is a two-way option on a two year contract from the end of the season: either party can avtivate it

  • Mitchell says:

Great result yesterday. I commented 0-2, so the extra goal was super. Now we face a side who we really want for our next game. Win and we leapfrog them – draw then ok. Like Davis in the midfield mix always have-and Toral giving nice balance and a touch of class. Ipswich and Sheff. Wednesday to come and excitement bubbling up.

  • Womble Joe says:

Prospective owners or current should right now be writing GR a cheque for £5 million and adding it to the £3.5 from the Gray sale and making all of it available to GR for players. I am certain that level of funding would get us up into the £100 million a year premiership.

As the company’s greatest asset they should also secure Gary’s services via an enhanced contract with a hefty buy out clause.

    I can dream.

Imagine the gambler that is Carson finding a backer who would do this. We’d accept that wouldn’t we?

  • Roger says:

Are blues going to sign any players?
GR promised we would be active in this window
So far all we have done is sell our best player and replace him
With a 1 month loan Will Buckley (who)?
Won’t mention Vaughan we already had him
If are to make the play offs we need completion for places and not a
Squad full of loan players it does not work ask Lee Clark.

  • Dave Mann says:

Would we womble , not so sure about having a backer backed by Carson though . a complete new start would be my thinking but Ime only speaking for myself . KRO

  • the real deal says:

Not suprised at the result as I actually predicited it on the FOREST Matchday thread

  • Dave Mann says:

Did you have a bet on it ? 33/1 I think for 0-3 so good job if you did !! KRO

  • The Flying Pig says:

    Great performance and great result.

Please go out and get us a LB, CH and a different type of midfielder and we can make the play-offs. I don’t expect we can afford to buy all of those but a loan will do fine if the player is the right calibre and the right mentality. Of course, the latter represents the gamble. Attitude is always key, it just seems to me to be even more important with loan deals.
