Blues Ladies Complete Double Over Lady Pies
Birmingham City Ladies went into the mid-season break on a high with a tense 1-0 victory over Notts County Ladies. Remi Allen scored the only goal of the game, poking home the rebound after Jo Potter saw her effort saved by Lady Pies keeper Carly Telford.
The result confirms Blues Ladies in third place in the WSL, and leaves them just one point behind Chelsea in second although David Parker’s team have played more games. However, having started the season as one of the favourites for the drop WSL status for next season looks almost certainly confirmed with only half of the season gone.
After some kamikaze defending on Thursday it was good Blues were much tighter at the back. Jess Carter was once again outstanding while both Aoife Mannion and Emily Westwood were resolute in preventing Ellen White from getting much service.
Up front Blues once again suffered a little bit from a lack of confidence in their shooting but it was notable more players were having efforts on goal which was a lot more positive. Mel Lawley and Freda Ayisi both scared the Notts County defence with their direct pacy running and one feels it’s not far from clicking for both of them as they get more minutes playing together.
Remi Allen made the difference in the second half, pushing up closer to the front two to give more presence in the box and it was this that did the trick; Potter created a chance for herself on the edge of the area which Telford could only parry into the path of Allen who made no mistake.
Although Blues were let off when Baggaley lost the ball on the edge of the area and Luik slammed her shot wide with the goal gaping, the young keeper showed her worth with an absolute world class save from a close-range Ellen White volley.
The game got niggly towards the end as the frustration showed on Notts County faces; on paper their team should have easily won but their lack of cohesion was all too evident.
Blues ladies go into the break unbeaten in five, having not conceded a goal in four and with potential additions to come in June could be the season’s surprise package. Their next game is at home to Arsenal Ladies on July 29.

Good result and win and as you say we should already have enough points on the board to have any worries about relegation … Losing Carney was a blow but with Kirsty still to come back it’s looking ok for our ladies and let’s hope they keep picking up the points and not conceding any goals .. The men take note ! KRO
Super Blues…….KRO
Great performance yesterday. Anyone thinking that Women’s Football is not physical enough would change their minds if they saw some of our tackles which can only be described as “Robinson-esque” in how they lifted the crowd. Funniest moment must be Rachel Yankey (good England player in her time….but have never been able to stand her for some reason) trying to push Marcus Bignot to the ground. ps…sorry to bore you Walker and Tony!!
I chatted to Marcus at the start of the season and he thought they would struggle this season. To do this well on that budget is a massive achievement.
I see BCLFC has signed Isabelle Linden a German International from FFC Frankfurt.
Hopefully she will solve the dearth of goals problem in the second half of the season.
Respect to those behind the scenes for their efforts in making this signing possible.
Think the lack of postings rather proves my point zzzzzzz
If it means less of these type of idiotic comments, I’m all for it.
It’s my site. I will post articles on what I want to, when I want to. If you don’t like it, don’t read it. It’s really that simple.
But you are STILL reading the site and even going to the time and trouble of commenting on it. Weird!
I’m just waiting to put my Dahlias out.
One good thing about being so thick(skinned) is that you don’t have to wear gloves I suppose Tony. Can you not take a hint from the author?
Good finish to the first half of the season. Hopefully, the acquisition of Linden will further strengthen the squad and help in a positive second half.
Some great football so far with the defence looking very solid. Looking forward to seeing Linden adding more goals to the mix.
