Zigic Scores Against Leeds Again; Blues Dev Squad v Leeds Reflections
Birmingham City’s development squad comprehensively beat their Leeds United counterparts 2-0 at Wast Hills today thanks to goals from Nikola Zigic and Akwasi Asante.
Zigic opened the scoring in the sixth minute with a pearler of a goal, controlling the ball before delicately lobbing it over the keepers head from the edge of the area. Asante doubled the lead on 21 minutes slotting home from the right hand side after being played in by Zigic.
The lanky Serb showed no obvious signs of rustiness after his layoff with a back complaint and did a decent enough job winning the ball and leading the line. He looked a little miffed after taking a blow to the head in one challenge but he can be pleased enough with his overall contribution.
Asante had a quieter game in comparison – he didn’t really look like the bustling striker he has been in the past but he can be happy with how well he took his goal. David Murphy on the other hand looked like he had never been away in his first start in eleven months with a good display at left back against the dangerous Sam Byram and David Norris.
In the middle Kwadwo Asamoah showed his promise with a good display; consistently winning the ball and bursting forwards into the box and indeed the Ghanaian teenager was unlucky not to add a third after some good build up play on the right between Koby Arthur and substitute Reece Hales. His display contrasted with Scott Allan who seemed somewhat subdued and who struggled to impose his authority on the game.
Arthur too showed some brilliance – the backheel to play in Hales for the aforementioned chance was just sublime but he played too many passes short and drifted inside too often allowing Norris and Byram plenty of room to attack down the Leeds right.
At the back James Fry slotted into an unfamiliar right back role fairly well whilst Will Packwood and Nathaniel Kelly in the centre of defence were up to most of what was thrown at them, and both coped well with the change on the hour which saw Kelly shifted to left back and Fry join Packwood in the middle.
Team (4-4-2)
Nick Townsend; James Fry, David Murphy (Demarai Gray), Kwadwo Asamoah, Will Packwood, Nathaniel Kelly, Ryan Higgins, Koby Arthur, Akwasi Asante (Charlee Adams), Scott Allan, Nikola Zigic (Reece Hales)
subs not used: Callum Preston, Liam Truslove

Hi Almajir. Is Mitch Hancox injured?
Not as far as I know
I assume mich will be in the squad for tomorrow as paul robinson is out. so i guess thats why he didnt play today
with a fit again zigic, do you think he will delve into the loan market, money permitting?
Pierre,
Haven’t you just answered your own question?
Can only be good news with Ziggy and Asante both on the score sheet and getting some match practice.
With Koby and Reece Hales joining in too LC may have some selection headaches.
Danny Murphy will be a boost defensively, especially with the number of yellow cards we have amassed so far.
I take it that if there are no reactions that both Ziggy and Asante will be in the squad to travel to Burnley or is it too soon?
KRO
Danny Murphy?
OOpppssss Sorry, been so long since he played…. David…
Great to see Murphy back, I think he’s one player who could fit in well with LC’s 3-5-2 system
hi Almijir, thanks for the best ever veritable reports and I hope your book goes well , Gary is no mug, so best of luck, Norman
friend of Gary,s
Personally I am hoping Zigic and Asante pair up and solve Birmingham’s goalscoring problems.
There is no guarantee Clark will pick Zigic, remember last season against Leeds ?Zigic was fit and available and it was against Leeds a team he had previously destroyed, he wasnt picked.
What the same Clark who told Zigic a few home truths then got the best out of him and he went on to play more games consecutively than at any time in his Blues career. Another armchair with an agenda who blames Clark for the sake of it without referring to the actual truth
Please both scored this will boost the team no end…..hopefully our luck will turn……starting tomorrow…..
One would assume would one not that both serb n murph will start on saturday which has already become a six pointer has it not mmmmm? A must win game
Serb???tut tut ! they don’t like it up em mmmm?
Thanks for the report it is all very promising, so now I am waiting for the next sledgehammer to hit us.
I believe in BCFC but I will not expect anything.
Gerald I disagree, for most of the season and particularly at this stage, there is no “must win” game. If there is a must, it is “must get the crowd going”.
having big zig and murphy back is like 2 quality loan signings – great news
blues to win at burnley – competition for places now !!
Hi Dan Interesting comment from Moyes today for dealing with dives. Must read your column.
A draw at Burnley will be a cracking result. But I would expect us to beat Sheffield Wednesday, they’re certainly no great shakes. Antonio is dangerous and left back Reda Johnson likes to get a goal or two. If Zigic plays, it will be a very interesting battle between him and Miguel Llera. The Spaniard is…. how can I put it…. a bit of a dirty bugger…. arms and elbows everywhere. He’s a threat at corners and free kicks too. But that’s about it for them.
I think we might get more than one goal for a change.
Come on staffs see if we can pick the same team for the Burnley match me its .
Randolph
Caddis Bartley Burn Hancox
Spector Adeyemi
Burke Ambrose Furguson
Novak
I have a feeling that he might revert to 3-5-2…. with Spector in the back 3 and Caddis and Ferguson the wingbacks.
is the tide turning towards clark….. competition for places now that makes a change……. players working harder to get in the 1st team…….come on lads….. we will have cracked once the goals go in…………
but other fans will have a gripe about something elsemmmmmmmmmmmmmm i wonder!!!!!!!!!!! the pies are cold on saturdaymmmmmmmmmmmm
Score more than one mmmmm? You must have a drink problem it would seem would it not mmmmm?
Gerald – word to the wise fella, the “mmmm” schtick isn’t funny… Leave it out okay, there’s a good chap.
So you think we’ll go 46 games without scoring more than one goal a game? O-kay.
Thanks for the Report, Dan.
Clark will pick whoever trains well in the week and then worry about the opposition before choosing his formation instead of playing our own game. Tinker Man. Not a Tactician. Not surprising we are not consistent. Novak is not prolific neither is Zigic. Green is not up to standard. No surprise that we aint converting our chances. I think one thing you can say about Ziggy is – he will create space for others at least. Where is the 20 season striker tho?
Defence very good tho but losing 1-0 every week is a habit that needs breaking fast.
Good to see murphy on his way back as he will chip in with a few goals and assists k.r.o
