Can Blues Go Up? An OP Editorial

Talking Points sponsored by John Hicken Industrial roofing and cladding materials

It’s been a rough few weeks for Blues fans’ promotion hopes. Defeats against Leicester away and Forest at home; stumbling to draws at Coventry and at home to Derby have seen Blues fall out of the playoff zone and pretty much kiss the chances of automatic promotion goodbye. Can Blues bounce back to the Premier League at the first attempt?

Ideals of Success

I guess there will be a plethora of postings on Blues boards this weekend about “this time last year”, but having sat here watching videos of the final and what-not I thought I’d add my two-pennorth.

Atmosphere

From reading the forums and messageboards one bone of contention I’ve picked up from Blues fans is the lack of atmosphere at St Andrews. The Burnley game was a case in point – for long periods it was very quiet and it was possible to hear the players shouting to each other. Have we become fickle fans?

Boyfriends and Football

One of the few times the Tilton was in full voice during yesterday’s game against Brighton and Hove Albion was to mockingly ask the Brighton fans if their male spouses were aware of their presence at the football. Whilst for some it’s just a terrace chant, it raises the spectre of homophobia for others and I thought it would be worth talking about.

Pride of a Bluenose

I should be writing a preview of the Bristol City game today which kicks off in a couple of hours, but I’ll be honest and say that I’ve not done the research to be able to do it properly. Instead, I want to share with you my sheer pride and happiness in being a bluenose – and it’s not just because of the result in Brugge.

You may have seen in this morning’s Birmingham Mail a report about the formation of a Supporters Trust for Birmingham City. As a “key instigator”, I thought I would share with you my personal reasons and opinions on the whole idea.

A Mad Mission to Maribor

When I was at university, oh so many moons ago I grew tired of drinking in the same old watering holes in town, and thus my friends and I decided to undertake “mad missions” whereby we’d go to another city (as far away as we could), get legless, and then get home – all without sleep, and all within 24 hours. Maribor, well… it was just like that.

Bipolar Football

Talking Points sponsored by John Hicken Industrial roofing and cladding materials

It’s a tough old life being a Bluenose. You go from the highlights of a thumping 3-0 home win with the first hat-trick scored by a Blues player for three and a half years, through seeing Blues make their debut in the Europa League group stages to the low of seeing Blues get tanked 4-1 away at Southampton, who spent last season two divisions below Birmingham City. You don’t have to read many Blues forums to see how fans react to this rather bipolar existence.
