Easter News Roundup

Easter has been weird this year, falling on the international break. It’s normally a time where there is a flurry of games in quick succession which can make or break a season – this year the only thing that I’ve seen broken has sadly been Jack Butland’s ankle in England’s excellent 3-2 win over Germany.

Fulham Reflections

Birmingham City were held to a frustrating draw at home to Fulham in a game that has rocked their chances of a late playoff push. Michael Morrison’s header cancelled out Rohan Ince’s first half opener but despite throwing everything that they could at the Cottagers’ back line, once again Blues were restricted to a single point.

Two Points Dropped – Wolves Reflections

Birmingham City failed to score for the fifth game in a row away from home as they were held to a goalless draw at Molineux. Clayton Donaldson, Jon Toral and David Davis all had chances to score in the second half but only David Davis was able to test Carl Ikeme who proved to be up to the challenge.

Sheffield Wednesday Reflections

Two goals from Gary Hooper condemned Blues to their first league defeat of 2016 at a wet St Andrew’s. Blues had taken the lead when Clayton Donaldson made the most of a ricochet from Tom Lees’ clearance in first half injury time but they were undone by two goals in two minutes in the second half.

A Christmas Cracker – MK Dons Reflections

Birmingham City returned to winning ways for the second game in succession at St Andrew’s against MK Dons. Jacques Maghoma scored his first goal at home in Blues colours to settle the game but in fairness the 1-0 scoreline flattered the visitors.

Keep the Faith – Sheffield Wednesday Reflections

The resurgence in Birmingham City’s form met a brick wall at Sheffield Wednesday with the Owls running out comfortable 3-0 winners. Two goals in two first half minutes put Carlos Carvalhal’s men in control with Fernando Forestieri adding his second and Wednesday’s third early into the first half.

Purpose and Goals

Birmingham City consolidated their position just outside the playoff zone on Friday with a scrappy 1-0 victory over Cardiff settled by a somewhat disputed penalty scored by Paul Caddis. With just under half the season gone they lie in seventh, a point behind Ipswich and still in contention for a chance of post-season glory.
