Under Pressure

Match previews sponsored by EZE Group - Lifestyle Experts

Tomorrow sees the visit of Wolves to St Andrews, in what can only be described in the classic football cliché of a “six-pointer”. With the end of the season now coming up fast, pressure is starting to bear down on Blues – even more so on Wolves – and tomorrow could be an absolute humdinger.

Messageboard Messiahs

Talking Points sponsored by John Hicken Industrial roofing and cladding materials

It’s a sad fact that players who are currently not in the Birmingham City team will be considered by many on the Blues Messageboards as the missing link within the team; the chosen one who will lead the team back to winning ways, and McLeish is only leaving them out because he’s an idiot. It doesn’t matter how poorly the player has played in previous games, or how well the player he would be replacing is playing, McLeish is wrong and the internet is right.

Parking the Bus

Tomorrow sees the Blues travel to west London to play the re-arranged fixture against the Pensioners of Chelsea. For Chelsea, they must win this game to have any chance of retaining the league title; it’s not as vital for Birmingham but an upset would see them shoot up the table into the top half – such is the compactness of what has been a very tight division this year.

David Murphy

It’s a fact of life that when players are out of the first team, their stock on messageboards rises as fans clamour for their return – especially during a run of poor performances and/or poor results. It doesn’t matter how poor those players have been in other games that season; their omission is clearly what is wrong with the team. Today, I’m going to make my nomination for a player to come into the team – step forward Mr David Murphy.

Players without position

Talking Points sponsored by John Hicken Industrial roofing and cladding materials

With the advent of football management simulators such as the excellent Football Manager series by Sports Interactive, it appears people have become more rigid in the way they see players – instead of a player being a midfielder they’re now an “attacking midfielder” or a “defensive midfielder”; you hear of players being “water carriers” or “playing in the hole”. Formations are more flexible now, and it’s given rise to a perceived problem within the Birmingham City team – the player without a position.

The Kevin Phillips Conundrum

Talking Points sponsored by John Hicken Industrial roofing and cladding materials

For a team that doesn’t score many goals, the Kevin Phillips conundrum is an intriguing one. For a player that has scored in every game he has started this season, you can understand why he might want to start more games. It’s an issue that has caused discussion on the messageboards, and I thought that I would look into it a bit deeper.

Alex

After the home defeat against Newcastle United, there has been much opinion about the Blues midfield, and how in the last couple of games they have looked off the boil. Craig Gardner has come in for a fair amount of criticism, and in my eyes at least some of it justified. Whilst Gardner is still […]

Defeat

Some reflections on the game against Newcastle United: 1) The Corinthian Spirit doesn’t win matches I admire the fact that McLeish has tried to impress on the Blues team that they should play the game in a sporting manner; not going down from a challenge unless they have to, not niggling the ref or other […]

Stoke Preview

Match previews sponsored by EZE Group - Lifestyle Experts

It’s been a quiet week at St Andrews whilst some players have been on international duty, and hopefully the rest will have done the squad some good before tomorrow’s visit of Stoke City. Having had a quick scan through the injury list, it would appear that barring long term absentees Scott Dann and James McFadden, […]

More Tictacs

Talking Points sponsored by John Hicken Industrial roofing and cladding materials

As we enter the second half of the transfer window having failed to bring in any strikers, there is now a faction within the fans who believe that maybe bringing in a striker is a bad idea, as we only ever play one anyway. This has led to more calls for the manager’s head as […]
