Mulling over Mullins
News broke this evening that Blues were close to signing 33-year-old Portsmouth midfielder Hayden Mullins. The player, who would cost Blues at most a nominal fee has been training with Birmingham City at Wast Hills on Wednesday and seems poised to join the club.

McFadden and the D-Club; What I’ve Been Reading This Week
As you may know, I regularly read other Birmingham City related stuff online, and in this regular feature I’ve been featuring the best of what I’ve seen. Here’s what I’ve found this week.

McFadden and Parnaby
One story that has come out in the last week at Blues is that former Blues players James McFadden and Stuart Parnaby are training with the club – ostensibly to keep fit but also to try and get new contracts.

Squad Analysis Pt II
Yesterday I took a look at the Blues squad, highlighting who I thought was likely to leave, the shallowness of what was left and the areas Blues need to strengthen as a matter of urgency. Now the squad for the five day trip to Ireland has been announced, I thought I’d look at that and reflect further.

Jimmy Mac, when are you coming back?
Today was the day that the Blues players arrived back at Wast Hills for pre-season training. As the photos appeared on bcfc.com though, the focus was on players who weren’t there more than those who were. One of those players, James McFadden, has been a focus of attention and I thought it was worth jotting down some notes to clear up some misconceptions.

Contracts
As the 2010-11 season draws to a close, eleven Birmingham City players are in a position where they don’t know what club they will play for next season. Under the Bosman ruling, they are free to talk to any club outside of the English League system about a contract for next year, but will have to wait until June 1 before they can discuss terms with another English team. I thought I’d take a look at those eleven players in a bit more detail.

Players without position
With the advent of football management simulators such as the excellent Football Manager series by Sports Interactive, it appears people have become more rigid in the way they see players – instead of a player being a midfielder they’re now an “attacking midfielder” or a “defensive midfielder”; you hear of players being “water carriers” or “playing in the hole”. Formations are more flexible now, and it’s given rise to a perceived problem within the Birmingham City team – the player without a position.

Liverpool Preview
So, on Sunday we host the red flavour of scouseland, and I thought I’d put together some thoughts about what I think will happen. 1) Deadline Day was busy, but don’t expect to see any new recruits on Sunday Jean Beausejour (hereafter referred to as Dave, for reasons that are too complicated to explain now) […]

Reflections on the Blackburn game
There are too many people who write reports, so I thought I’d just sum up my thoughts in a few points 1) Paul Robinson is not an international class keeper Barring one top drawer save from a Scott Dann header, he didn’t really do much – and he should have had the second Craig Gardner […]
