Obafemi Martins

Past, Present and Future

Four years ago today a Frenchman collided with a Pole allowing Obafemi Martins to score probably the easiest goal in his career and secure the Carling Cup for Birmingham City, the first major trophy for the club in 48 years. Watching in the crowd was the then-President of Birmingham City, Carson Yeung – who was celebrating his 51st Birthday (and apparently winning a £250,000 bet with Balram Chainrai).

Who Stuck the Ball in the Arsenal Net?

Talking Points sponsored by John Hicken Industrial roofing and cladding materials

Two years ago today a Nigerian striker by the name of Obafemi Martins set off the waterworks in thousands of Brummies by tucking the ball away into the Arsenal goal after a horrendous mixup between Wojciech Szczesny and Laurent Koscielny to win the Carling Cup for Birmingham City.

It’s an important match for Birmingham City tomorrow in the race to beat the drop from the Premiership, against one of their rivals in the relegation fight Blackburn Rovers. Ewood Park has been a tough place for Blues to get points, with Blues not winning there since 1968, suffering five defeats in their last eight trips there. Defeat to Blackburn wouldn’t be the end of the world, but this is a game where Blues should be aiming to win to stay out of the drop zone and maybe force Blackburn into it.

After the Lord Mayor’s Show

Here are my reflections on the Birmingham City v WBA game. Due to illness, I was at home watching this on Sky Sports 2. 1) David Bentley is going to have to improve As things stand, I don’t think we can afford him anyway, but on today’s performance I wouldn’t sign him. He has got […]

Wembley. It’s almost upon us blues fans, and already the nerves are kicking in. Realistically, having seen Birmingham City tonked by Arsenal at home this season Blues have no chance of winning it – but there is that tiny spark of hope that remains, that keeps saying what if… What if Seb Larsson is on […]

Owls

Reflections on today’s cup tie against Sheffield Wednesday. Due to financial constraints, this was one I watched at home via the net. 1) Hleb the Engima Having been critical of the Belarusian recently, I was pleased to see just how well he can play today. It’s a shame he got injured so early on; had […]

Defeat

Some reflections on the game against Newcastle United: 1) The Corinthian Spirit doesn’t win matches I admire the fact that McLeish has tried to impress on the Blues team that they should play the game in a sporting manner; not going down from a challenge unless they have to, not niggling the ref or other […]

After two one nil wins on the bounce, the question has to be asked if McLeish should change anything for the visit of Newcastle United to St Andrews tonight. With Aliaksandr Hleb the only player joining long term absentees Scott Dann and James McFadden on the injury list, Eck has the luxury of being able […]

Anti-football

My reflections on the home game against Stoke City: 1) When you’re wrong, you’re wrong For most of the second half, I was thinking Zigic needed to be subbed; indeed, when Jerome came on I thought it would be for the lanky Serb rather than Martins. McLeish got it spot on though; whilst Zigic didn’t […]

Stoke Preview

Match previews sponsored by EZE Group - Lifestyle Experts

It’s been a quiet week at St Andrews whilst some players have been on international duty, and hopefully the rest will have done the squad some good before tomorrow’s visit of Stoke City. Having had a quick scan through the injury list, it would appear that barring long term absentees Scott Dann and James McFadden, […]
