Consolidation
Birmingham City extended their streak of draws to four with a 1-1 stalemate against Fulham on Saturday. A raucous contingent of away fans were on hand to see a David Cotterill free kick cancel out Hugo Rodallega’s opener as Gary Rowett’s men continued to consolidate their midtable position.

Overload
Birmingham City completed the signing on loan of Albert Rusnak on Tuesday to bolster their attacking midfield options in the wake of Jesse Lingard’s non-return from Manchester United. However, Rusnak is the eleventh player to be considered a midfielder to have signed in Lee Clark’s 18 month reign. Are we signing the right players?

Three Four Three
Two wins, two excellent performances and seven goals for make this week an excellent one for Blues. Lee Clark has admitted he has a selection headache ahead of the weekend trip to Reading with so many players having made a case in the last two games to retain a first team place.

Changing Formations
Birmingham City face Swansea City on Wednesday night buoyed by a comprehensive victory over Sheffield Wednesday at the weekend. However, the south Wales outfit are a considerable step up in class from the Owls and offer a completely different challenge to Lee Clark and his managerial abilities.

Ambrose and a Five Man Midfield
Lee Clark this week spoke about he thought Darren Ambrose had a lot to offer the Birmingham City side still and how Blues fans haven’t seen the best of him. The twenty-eight year old midfielder has made just seven appearances since signing from Crystal Palace for £250,000 and has only scored one goal – on his debut against Barnet in the League Cup.

Stick or Twist
Did you ever play Pontoon as a kid? You know, the game where you have to make 21 with the cards? Sometimes you’d be dealt a fairly crappy hand and you’d be left in the quandary of knowing what to do – play safe and stick with what you’ve got knowing you could well lose with it, or go for it and ask for another card knowing it could easily bust you out as much as it could win the game for you. Lee Clark is in this position right now with Blues and I think it’s a decision he’s struggling with.

The Left Back Conundrum
With David Murphy receiving a red card for two bookable offences on Tuesday night, Blues are once again going to have to solve a conundrum as to who to play there. As the red card was for two yellows it can’t be appealed even if Blues had wanted to do so, and as such Birmingham have four fit first team defenders currently for the Cardiff game on Sunday – Peter Ramage, Curtis Davies, Steven Caldwell and Pablo Ibanez. Which way do they go?

Unpopular Tactics
So, the Blues unbeaten run came to an abrupt end at the weekend. Having had a little while to think about it, I’ve come to the conclusion that one thing cost us more than everything else – and that was the change from the 4-5-1 Blues have been playing recently to what you think would think is a more natural 4-4-2. I know this may be heretical, but right now I think we’d be better off playing just one up top.

The Fear
One thing that has been extensively argued on Birmingham City messageboards this season has been the dour football that the Blues have dished up on a regular basis for the fans. Whilst the team is high on work-rate, and on battling for points, it’s low on creativity and fashioning chances, let alone goals. The accusation is often levelled at Alex McLeish that he is too negative with his tactics, and too careful in the teams he sends out.

Back to the Chalkboard
Having had some time to reflect on the game yesterday against Wolves, I thought it would be interesting to review and analyse in detail some of the match to show where Blues were strongest and weakest.
