Fergie on Loan?

Sixteen months after he left Birmingham for Ian Holloway’s Blackpool, there are rumours that Barry Ferguson is on his way back to the mighty Blues on loan. The 34-year-old midfielder is said to have become unhappy with the rotation system Ian Holloway has employed this season and wants to move away from Bloomfield Road for guaranteed first team football.

Letting Go Of Ol’ Faithful Ferguson

So, it would appear the next player through the St Andrews exit door could be 33 year old Scottish midfielder Barry Ferguson. Sky Sports understands that Blackpool have agreed a fee for him, and whilst I’m told Fergie is still with the squad out in Ireland I believe it will only be a matter of time before Peter Pannu is cashing another cheque.

Squad Analysis

With Blues scheduled to play friendlies against Cork City and Worcester City this weekend, I thought it might be worth having a look at the squad as it stands just to see exactly how thin it is and where I think we will have to strengthen if we’re to have a hope of doing well this season.

Tomorrow sees the Blues travel to west London to play the re-arranged fixture against the Pensioners of Chelsea. For Chelsea, they must win this game to have any chance of retaining the league title; it’s not as vital for Birmingham but an upset would see them shoot up the table into the top half – such is the compactness of what has been a very tight division this year.

Piano Players and Piano Shifters

Despite a creditable draw yesterday at Ewood, one criticism I’ve seen levelled at Alex McLeish has been his reluctance to include more flair within the team. Whilst Martins, Bentley and Zigic all missed out with injury Hleb was available and on the bench, and many blues fans felt that as the second half drew on, we missed having a creative outlet massively.

Two Boxes

Saturday’s game was not just seen as a return to winning ways by Blues fans, but a return to a team that is attacking; a team full of purpose, of vim and vigour. For many, including Colin Tattum here, the return of Kevin Phillips to the team is seen as the catalyst for the improvement of performance. Whilst not denigrating at all KP’s contribution to the game on Saturday, I think that there is more to the win than just Phillips being able to score a goal – Blues were better defensively, and for Blues that can mean the difference between three points and no points.
