Alex McLeish

Comings and Goings

One of the most frequent questions I get asked on twitter and on forums is what I think Blues will do transfer-wise this summer. There seems to be a fear online that Blues will not be competing this summer in the higher price brackets for players, due to not having the money; and that with a whole host of players out of contract come June 30 we’re really going to be struggling next year.

Whilst tomorrow’s match isn’t a “must-win” by any means, it would be nice if Blues could get at least a point and finally put an end to any lingering worries of relegation. Provided we don’t get hammered (again), defeat wouldn’t be that much of a catastrophe – but it would be nice if Blues could improve on an away record which has seen them pick up just two away wins in seventeen games.

The Fear

One thing that has been extensively argued on Birmingham City messageboards this season has been the dour football that the Blues have dished up on a regular basis for the fans. Whilst the team is high on work-rate, and on battling for points, it’s low on creativity and fashioning chances, let alone goals. The accusation is often levelled at Alex McLeish that he is too negative with his tactics, and too careful in the teams he sends out.

Under Pressure

Tomorrow sees the visit of Wolves to St Andrews, in what can only be described in the classic football cliché of a “six-pointer”. With the end of the season now coming up fast, pressure is starting to bear down on Blues – even more so on Wolves – and tomorrow could be an absolute humdinger.

Messageboard Messiahs

It’s a sad fact that players who are currently not in the Birmingham City team will be considered by many on the Blues Messageboards as the missing link within the team; the chosen one who will lead the team back to winning ways, and McLeish is only leaving them out because he’s an idiot. It doesn’t matter how poorly the player has played in previous games, or how well the player he would be replacing is playing, McLeish is wrong and the internet is right.

A heavy blow but not a fatal one

Normally, I’d do a write up of the previous match the day after, but having read many of the messageboards, I don’t think much more can be added. It was a dire result, a poor performance – particularly defensively – and it’s a worry that we can play so badly with a local derby coming up, especially considering our poor record in local derbies this season.

Piano Players and Piano Shifters

Despite a creditable draw yesterday at Ewood, one criticism I’ve seen levelled at Alex McLeish has been his reluctance to include more flair within the team. Whilst Martins, Bentley and Zigic all missed out with injury Hleb was available and on the bench, and many blues fans felt that as the second half drew on, we missed having a creative outlet massively.

Looking Forwards

I think we can all agree that Saturday’s game against Wigan was a horror show, whichever way you look at it. I don’t think it’s just that Blues didn’t turn up, or our tactics were off, but that it was a game we needn’t have lost. I said before the game it wasn’t a “must win”, more of a “must not lose” – but watching the game it became evident early on it was a “should win” game because of how poor and nervous the hosts looked.
