Empty Saturday

Due to Leeds playing in the fifth round of the FA Cup, Blues have a fixture-less Saturday along with fellow promotion hopefuls Middlesborough. However, there are eight championship fixtures today – is this the weekend the gap becomes that much larger or can Blues maintain their position without playing?

Monday Morning Introspection

Birmingham City drew 0-0 with Rotherham this weekend with Neil Warnock’s new charges finishing with just nine men. However, following defeats for Derby County and Ipswich Town Blues very much remain in the playoff hunt in seventh place, three points behind Sheffield Wednesday.

The Quiet Life

It’s easy to tell it’s quiet around Birmingham City. The local press are left writing pieces on the five things we didn’t know about the coaching staff or which former player thinks we should be sold this week; Blues fans on social media have their gaze turned to the circus across the Expressway and I’m left scratching around for a fluff piece to fill the website.

Clark in the Media

It appears that the Daily Star has got people all of a flutter this morning with a lurid story of player revolt in the dressing room and on the training pitch with the implication that Lee Clark’s tenure as boss of Blues may come to a swift end because of it. There have been some rumours on messageboards about the players not backing Clark so is there truth in what the Star is saying?

Hughton and the Red Tops

Two national tabloid newspapers went with stories this morning regarding the likelihood of Chris Hughton taking over the manager’s position at West Bromwich Albion from new England boss Roy Hodgson. The Sun and the Star went with near identical stories naming Hughton as the number one candidate to take on the hotseat at the Hawthorns due to the continuing financial uncertainties at St Andrews.

Trophy on the Pitch?

Talking Points sponsored by John Hicken Industrial roofing and cladding materials

Would you want to see Reading presented with the Championship trophy at St Andrews this weekend? It’s a question that’s doing the rounds of the forums at the moment and it’s one I’ve been thinking about myself.

TV Rights and Wrongs

Money. It’s something that we all wish we had more of, and yet it’s something we all see as corrupting – be it politicians, bankers or football. I read this article interviewing the Liverpool chief exec, where he talks about the break up of international Premier League rights, and I thought it was a good subject to talk about – particularly bearing in mind Blues’ being an internationally owned company.

Enjoy the Silence

Talking Points sponsored by John Hicken Industrial roofing and cladding materials

If the current paucity of Blues stories on Newsnow is to be believed, this is the week that football forgot – at least in the part of the world around St Andrews. To say there is a dearth of news out there is an understatement right now, and it’s made me think about Blues right now from a media perspective.

Interview with Janine Self

Those of you who use twitter may well know Janine Self – the “Queen of Midlands Football” is a well-respected sports writer covering the midlands patch for The People, as well as the ghost writer behind Robbie Savage’s autobiography. I caught up with her this week to ask her her thoughts on the bias against midlands teams in the national press, her view on the enigma that is Robbie Savage and her favourite grounds to visit as a reporter.

Rumours

Don’t believe everything you read. You’ve heard that before, haven’t you? It’s as true now as it’s ever been, yet some people still jump on every little rumour they hear. Football is one of those things that thrives on rumours, hearsay and gossip and I want to talk about this further.
